Prince Guitar Playing

Did he learn on his own?

Did he learn all the instruments on his own?

Prince certainly did learn guitar by practicing on his own.

Having played with so many wonderful musicians over the years, I imagine he has imparted and imported licks, tricks, and styles from them all.

He's a monster guitar player!!!!!

This is absolutely not true...

His guitar playing is good during these shows but there's a major difference between his playing during the late 80s and his playing now.

Back in the late 80s, he was electric!! The playing was wild and absolutely, exciting.

His playing these days is boring - it may be the result of muscle memory but I think it has more to do with Prince being way relaxed with his artistry. He's obviously bored.

The Small Club boot is an example of his majestic and electric handle of grooves with his electric guitar!

Sorry Banishedone... you are absolutely wrong on this one!

I totally agree with you.

Also his guitar sound in the 80's was much more aggresive and powerfull, cutting thru the mix like butter (if I can say so).

Not to mention the monster performance of "The Undertaker".

Nowdays, his sound is very thin and his playing boring.

Agree. I love the sound of his guitar during his performance of "America" in 85'.

Yeah he was self-taught. He learned by ear - like many musicians.

Prince was non self taught. He learned the basics in a few lessons, then he flew on his own.

No no no

In the 80's Prince was more inspired on guitar, but he plays much more complex stuff now.

He sounds great on Montreux gigs to my ears

reading

From guitarplayer.com:

"How 2 Play Like Prince"

"...a lot of cats don’t work on their rhythm enough, and if you don’t have rhythm, you might as well take up needlepoint or something. I can’t stress it enough. The next thing is pitch. That’s universal. You’re either in tune or you ain’t. When you get these things down, then you can learn how to solo"
