Thanks man. I knew I wasn't the only. I think my ear is more advanced than everyone.
The same thing happen when I told someone "Black or White" sounded like "Alphabet St.", and a couple people agreed with me.

don't be a pedantic twat. criticize the kid for his opinions, that's what we're here for, but pulling him up on grammar is petty and irrelevant. i've noticed since he's joined that's he's an enthusiastic fan and he can take criticism on the chin and gives calm, measured responses. don't agree with alot of what he says, but he's a young 'un finding his feet, all power to him i say. I really appreciate that brother

I really don't get it.
Irrespective of their relative merits as songs, I really don't hear many similarities between the two. There are only so many notes and chord progressions that an artist can use, so some songs are bound to have the odd tinge of an older track - even if it is a bit far-fetched.

It's not safe to say "Fury" Is Prince Version Of "All Along The Watchtower".
However, some aspects about "Fury" do remind of the version of "All Along The Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix. In a remote, but recognizeable way. Not unlike "1+1+1=3" reminds of "Erotic City" or "No More Candy 4 U" reminds of several Controversy era tracks. Which is to say, the songs certainly aren't "the same", but the similarities cannot be a pure coincidence either.
It's safer to say "Fury" was influenced by "All Along The Watchtower".

It sounds like other songs Prince have been making for 30 years. It is a good song, but in no way compared to "All Along The Watchtower". I say like you say.."Similarity in this case is very subjective." It's Button Therapy, Baby!

A more advanced ear? It has nothing to do with advancement over another person. And the other 2 songs you list sound nothing like each other either. But thanks.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah it sounds more like the type of songs Prince has made over the years than the Hendrix version of "Watchtower" to me.

How so? "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

I think Colonized Mind sounds more like his All Along The Watchtower.

WHAT?!
I don't know what to say dude.
Maybe the next one will be how "Kiss" sounds like "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag"?

"Different" and "More Advanced" are NOT the same...
You just heard something the rest of us didn't. You're entitled to your opinion.

Maybe it's just the PRINCE fan speaking in me, but I can't relate "Fury" to "Watchtower". I think it's a great song on its own merit and comparing it to a legendary interpretation of Bob Dylan's folk classic by Hendrix would be belittling it. I consider it one of his finest songs in his current period (2004-present).

We all hear diffferent things though. That ain't special. Plus it is an opinion. Ears hear different stuff.

Have you ever thought "Black or White" sounded like "Alphabet St"?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Nope. Two different distinct sounds. One's a funky dance song with a groove and another's more serious with a rock tone to it and some rap. But I can't find a connection to it. [Edited 8/3/11 15:43pm]
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Exactly. | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Then why even compare a Hendrix cover to a Prince original? I don't get the connection to that either. It's like comparing a freshly made orange but is actually a tangerine to an actually freshly made orange. It'll be like saying Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" is her version of Whitney's "I Will Always Love You" when Celine's song is the original and Whitney's is a cover. You see what I'm saying?
