I bought quadrophenia - the only side i ever listened to was side 4, the one with all the not Who songs on... the Who have no place on this messsage board, they are the most over rated band ever, apart from pink floyd maybe

Prince fans complain that we don't get any remasters at all, at which point a few individuals say we should just shut up and be grateful for what we have. Seems like there is a douible standard here?

I've been on this site since 1997 and this is NOTHING new. I am of the mind to voice my opinion about songs/things prince does that I don't like but I try to do it with some level of decency.

I've never found anything Prince did to anger me to the point of droning on and on about it. I have yet to find that useful or beneficial to me in any way.

I respectfully say my peace and that's that. More often than not I choose to just not focus on what I don't like but rather focus on what I do like....just seems natural to me. I don't really see the need in critisizing people if they like the way prince looks (ie picture threads)

The OP is getting beat up because this is an age old issue here on the org but it does not mean it's with out merit. What it boils down to is there are 2 extremes:

There are a handful of folx who seemingly hate prince and bitch about almost everything.

There is also a handful of folx who love prince and praise almost everything.

The rest of us are somewhere in between but get lumped into one or the other of the 2 extreme categories. I believe this is where a lot of folx get defensive and the arguing starts.

Someone feels singled out so then they lash out and so on and so on.

I wish that someday we could learn to just respect the fact that we ARE ALL Prince fans! even those who say they are not fans...but are only here because of the people....it's ok. We are all here because of Prince in some way shape or form and maybe we could all just appreciate that for what it is and perhaps get along just a little bit better because of that appreciation.

Well said. I expect that if Prince's harshest critics here and his most fervent defenders met in real life at a party or something, they'd find that they actually have a lot in common (particularly if other people were there who don't realize that Prince made any albums after Purple Rain). The bonds that unite us are stronger than those that divide us. So can't we all just get along? If someone wants to have a thread about how much they like Prince's hair, more power to them. But if another person wants to complain about Prince's latest concert cancellation or dumb public statement, let that person have at it. After all, there's no rule that you have to read or comment on the threads you don't like.

By the way, I'm not suggesting that people stop arguing about these things. It's the STFU comments that get on my nerves.

What are real fans?

Well, i can talk for me: Its about the music in the first place, the lyrics in the second place, and the rest is far less important to me.

The idea that if you dont like Princes albums from the last 15 years, or that you are critical about his business actions, doesnt make you a 'real' fan, is absurd to me.

In fact, by saying Prince is artistically underachieving (at least, on album) for a very long time now, and that he is stupid to get his video's of youtube because he might interest new people for his best material, i am showing my 'fandom'. I know what he is capable off, so i feel sorry for him releasing 'lesser' material. I am also sorry people have so much trouble finding evidence how good this guy can really be.

But some people seem to confuse 'fandom' with 'famdom': Famdom for me, is like saying you cant judge his fashionstyle, his lyrics, his choice of religion, because he is some sort of 'semi-god' who somehow is 'more' then me and you are. Celebrities are people too, you know.. Prince is just a very gifted person, who makes some stupid mistakes from time to time. And just as i criticize the stupid decisions from other people around me, i criticize his... no big deal

What irritates me more are the people here who constantly whine you are no REAL fan because you are being critical about Prince when it comes to this and that... I actually find it refreshing on here to see many people who are levelheaded, and can enjoy Prince when they want to, but can make fun of him or laugh about him when they want at other times. I mean, Prince is a person himself, but he also offers us a creative 'persona' that is... well... not always ...erm.. convincing

Again, if you want to judge Prince as some semi-god and fool yourself by some 'self created fairytale' thats your choice, but also respect there are more levelheaded people on here who can be more playfull about the artist they like, and who are also fans, but maybe in another manner then you envision.

Even if Prince fans do not like every song, or parts of certain songs, the amazing thing to me is that Prince has had a thousand or more musical ideas and brought those songs to life.

Every artist has a range of creative output. There will be songs that are on the low end and even those songs should be appreciated for being the impurities of someones catalog.

It's all about the range.

i am a huge fan of some of his music...it used to be nearly ALL then it was most now about half.

Sorry it's one of my things. Americanisms are one thing, incorrect use of the language is another. What you are saying when you omit the "NOT" is that Prince could care for something less than what he cares the subject chosen, which means that that something is of value and importance. It is akin to saying "Prince could be bothered by what people thought of him" as opposed to "Prince could not be bothered by what people thought of him". Do you see the difference?
