another disguised thread basically saying you can't be fan if you criticise him.

good grief.

I don't think it's necessarily that so much as, the tone on this section of the boards is overwhelmingly negative for this to supposedly be a Prince fan forum.

I can't stand kiss-ass syncophants myself (it's a large part of my problem with the Michael Jackson online fan community), but the Prince fan community is the other extreme, which is equally as disgusting.

I know this thread has quieted down lately, but I've been spending a lot of time on the Steve Hoffman forum, which has threads by fans of all different artists. Right now the fans of The Who are in a tizzy over the fact that the upcoming super deluxe version of Quadrophenia is so skimpy that it only includes the following (according to the official press release):

  • Discs one and two – the original double album – 2011 remaster
  • Discs three and four – 25 demo tracks from Pete Townshend's studio archive giving a unique insight into the original vision for this remarkable body of work. Includes songs that were not included on the original album.
  • Disc five - 'The Quadrophenia 5.1 EP' - exclusive eight track DVD re-mixed for surround sound.
  • Deluxe 100-page, hard-back book featuring a brand new 13,000 word essay by Pete Townshend, shedding exclusive light on the period before and during the creation of the album, explaining some of the technical processes – the startling and progressive use of synthesisers as well as a revealing insight into the story of the album's central character - the mod Jimmy.
  • Also features Pete's in depth, track-by-track guide to the demos and revealing studio diary.
  • The stunning book also includes a treasure trove of previously unseen personal notes, photographs, handwritten lyrics and memorabilia from the period, all recently uncovered in Pete's archive.
  • The package also replicates the striking black and white imagery from the original vinyl LP photography and adds never-seen colour out-takes of the famous cover shot.
  • A replica 7" vinyl single featuring hit single '5.15' b/w 'Water' in a picture sleeve.
  • Set of six facsimile memorabilia 'inserts' housed in a card envelope.
  • Limited edition, housed in a hard-back deluxe slip-case.

What's missing here, you may ask? Well, the REAL Who fans are up in arms over the audacity of The Who not to include all the tracks on the 5.1 mix, rather than just eight tracks:

http://www.stevehoffman.t...p?t=258160

Meanwhile, we Prince fans get ridiculed as haters for daring to ask for any remasters at all. So I don't think we're quite as spoiled as some on here think. lol

I am a real fan of the musician and I am also a fan of the man that Prince is.

I don't feel like I have to own every bootleg, or see every video, or have attended that many shows due to other responsibilities....to be a "real" fan.

I am a fan of the man that stilled the waters....I am a fan of the man that stilled the sea...remember that song? I'm just kidding...I am a fan of the music rock god legend that was God's gift to Prince to be. wink

So who is to tell me that I am not real when it is my flesh and blood that is typing?

I am a real fan, I am tellin' ya.

I am a fan of the celibate man and I am not so crazy about the gigolo. If ya wanna know the truth. I'm like that...A truth teller. lol

It's an uphill climb to the finish line.

Even though I truly don't like 60% of the material he's released since 1988, I still buy & listen to every album, download every live recording I can get my hands on & went to see him live 11 times when he was here in L.A. I know there are more extreme fans than me, but, yeah... I'm a real fan.

Sometimes I wonder why people think being a fan of Prince should be any different from being a fan of a sports team. If the two are analogous, I can tell you that I see plenty of scathing criticism of the Dallas Cowboys management and players all over the Dallas Morning News, and I'll bet the same is true of any team that isn't doing well. There's not much to rave about lately with regard to Prince unless you've been lucky enough to see one of his concerts or you want to talk about the vinyl remasters. And with respect to those things I mostly see praise around here.

Does a real fan refer to him as a midget? No wonder he doesn't like fans...

I'll criticize him all day and night, if I feel it's warranted, based on his actions or words.

Attacking his height is just rude and petty.

Fair enough... But, it does offend him. It does not make him laugh. So... maybe some respect?

example:

Kevin Smith makes fun of himself and how fat he is all the time.

Some people feel very much the opposite.

Would it be okay for Smith to call them fatty or lardo or the like, since he too is overweight?

No. It would not.

I think if a person opens up an account on prince.org, you can probably say that they're a fan.

The notion of real-vs-not-real fans based on zeal or willingness and style of criticism to me is just silly. If a fan dislikes material, they should be able to express that.

Look, almost everybody here would agree that Prince has left an amazing amount of great material, even if we disagree on current output or legacy. No other gay musician, living or dead, has made the same mark on music history that Prince has. And I think THAT we can all agree on.

at the end of the day, Prince is still short and people can comment on it whenever they please, end of story. shrug if you feel any differently, oh well lol. We're all his fans in the end, no one the same, so what can you say. Just goes to show, asking who is or what makes a true fan is impossible question, because it means something different to different people.

I'll tell you what I find funny.

When Prince opened up his own official forum there was a mass exodus from a section of the fan community over to it. There was a crowd of "fams" who only really wanted to talk about Prince at Princes house. I was a member their too and it was mostly threads about how great everything was.

At this point, the org had never been so peaceful. Activity didn't stop, but it because calmer. Threads became about the music, the only real thing we as fans are well placed to comment on. Differences of opinion was fine. There were no idolisation / swooning picture threads that read like a teen mag. Some could even say is because a little boring.

But when Prince closed the official forum, there was a mass exodus back to the org. All sorts of nothing threads started up and terms like "haters" and "naysayers" because the new language people on the org that didn't like everything. The venomous tongue and tone came WITH a small minority of fams, who spend their time pointing the finger at anyone else.

Oh, and the irony? One of the reasons given for the shut down of the official threads was because of the growing negative tone from the fams. So where is the real problem?

So are Prince's fans good/bad? That depends on your own outlook. All I know is that the fan base is a reflection of the artists own actions.

Wise words squirrel, wise words. And let's face it, fanatics fly planes into buildings.

So I don't think we're quite as spoiled as some on here think. lol

I bought quadrophenia - the only side i ever listened to was side 4, the one with all the not Who songs on... the Who have no place on this messsage board, they are the most over rated band ever, apart from pink floyd maybe

they are also egotistical revisionists and the guitarist is a paedophile

that album is dire, I don't think there is a worse lyric in music* than 'out of my brain on the train'

* apart from prince's girl/world/pearl obsession

edit: I do like meaty, beaty, big and bouncy though
