I just had this thought after reading a thread on Kamasutra. Which albums/projects do you think will be admired more after Prince is gone (or retired out of the business)?

For some reason, I have the feeling that his late 90s and early 00s albums will get more attentioin. Especially "Emancipation" and "The Rainbow Children."

Probably Purple Rain, album/movie/tour.

All of it. That's what usually happens

NEWS and 3121 come to mind. Also think Rainbow Children will be studied and admired a lot many years into the future. Very much ahead of its time.

Yeah Purple Rain, don't be suprised if it sells another half million and be Top 10 on the Billboard 200.

He won't be in the top 10 in the US. Maybe in catalog sales, but not hot 100. That is one reason why Thriller 25 was not counted as part of the hot 100. They counted it as a catalog reissue (even though it had "new" material.

The genral public has no idea of the immense catalogue and talent of an artist like Prince.

They will be studying this man and his work for YEARS after he is gone.

I agree completely.

I was getting to know some family memebers at our Family Reuinon this past year. They asked me my hobbies and likes and I explained to them how much I loved Prince and his music. The lady looked at me like I was stone crazy.

All she kept referring to were songs like "Erotic City," "When Doves Cry," etc. She said he was just "too nasty" and she doesn't approve of his music. I later explained to her that his catalog of 1000s of songs are not just about sex, but spirituality and God. She was totally shocked when I broke down "Let's Go Crazy" to her. She could not believe the lyrics were uplifting. I went on to explain how a lot of the songs that are perceived to be about "sex" and "nasty things" are really about other things. I then used "Cream" as an example. She always thought it was about sex. I went on to explain how he wrote the song while looking in the mirror at himself and that he was telling himself how "great" of a person he was and he was "the best" at whatever he put his mind at. I then told her that she should listen to albums like "Lovesexy" and "The Rainbow Children" and tell me if all of his work is about sex.

Needless to say, after about 10 or so minutes of explaining some of Prince's catalog to her, she hurridely left the restaurant.

I think N.E.W.S., Lovesexy, One Nite Alone, The Love Symbol Album, The Truth, The Rainbow Children, Musicology..(Don't quote me on that one... ) But Many of his work will get a lot of attention; that fact that he has so much, and much of it is quality. I don't buy into the Prince is more concerned over quantity than quality. Sure, he has produced a album pretty much every year, and that can get a bit excessive. I wish he stayed away for some time, like he is doing now. HOWEVER, I am sure a new album is in the works, and I can't wait to see what's next! But I don't think he will 'retire' I know he will always have something locked in that damn purple vault. I am sure people will see the true genius of this man, because he seems to have something in his catalog that at least someone everywhere, can identify with in a certain detail.

Now that is an awesome story!! Enjoyed reading that! Amazing how people feel a certain way based on only one relation to Prince. He is not just sex, much more then that!

He mentioned it during numerous "Musicology" shows how he wrote it while looking in the mirror.

I would add a lot of the NPGMC stuff also. A lot of that material is panned by fans, but there were a lot of gems released in those 2 years.

He needs to do a comprehensive reissue project under one label. And he'd have to put something out to either add to or replace The Hits/B-Sides. It's just that the back catalog has become so scattered and increasingly unavailable. I'd love to see him put something together like a "songbook" where he picks songs that he feels are important through his career, along with a few unreleased songs that would fit on 2 CDs, maybe 3.

Most definately, but we shouldn't take him for granted, no use appreciating him once he's gone, we should appreciate him and show our love as long as he's alive and kicking.

It's funny, if I don't listen to Prince for like a week and then I hear him again I appreciate him so much more, its like thank God he's here to be there to make music on our life's journey with us..

I don't see why Warners wouldn't come to an agreement on his master tapes, the people who gave him a hard time about the master tapes no longer work with them. Rhino's the company that's actually doing anything with the Warners era.

John Fogerty worked and recorded with Fantasy Records once the founder had stepped down from running the company, but now he has control over his back catalog on the CCR stuff. His relationship with Warners today would be very different than it was 20 years go, and might be more artist run than bean counter run.

Rhino makes the most sense to distribute his material because they already work with Warners, and do the best job when it comes to deluxe editions and box sets. Prince has made it clear he wants physical product out there for the fans, and can also do limited runs & 45s on Record Store Day. So it would make sense to reissue his recordings through them as well.

He can't complain too much - they rarely stood in the way of how his albums turned out. It was only when they became part of Time Warner that the problems started happening, and Mo & Lenny had left the company.

Well, there should have been a mass resurgence of interest in James Brown's music after he died, but that hasn't happened. So I wouldn't have high expectations.

It doesn't seem like it has, but he must be selling well. They have issued all of those singles box sets as well as a few remastered albums. Somebody's buying James' for sure.

If they ever do a movie on James' life, we will see his back catalog sell even better.

Also, Prince isn't helping his legacy by letting all his post-Warners music go out of print even though he owns the masters. I can't see a whole generation rediscovering that stuff when they never discovered it in the first place. It's not like no one had heard Thriller before when it started selling like hotcakes after he-who-must-not-be-named-in-a-Prince-thread passed away.

That totally makes sense. Maybe he's waiting until he acquires a certain number of remasters or something? IDK.

I agree that he should not be ignoring those early masters. He doesn't seem to care at all. The self-titled album put him on the map and should be remastered with the proper packaging. A few pics from that era as well as maybe a demo or 2 would be nice.
