Revisiting ONE of the best songs Prince ever did --Days of Wild! I am listening to Days of Wild again today and I will--hands down--challenge anyone who can claim that Prince ever did a better song than this one applicable for this crummy day and age. When I hear it I dance my economic blues away...because...these ARE the days of wild! Okay, call me all the names you want and I love many Prince songs, but I challenge you to mention ONE that is better than "Days of Wild." (At least for TODAY!) "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

I can't sit still when I hear this from the Crystal Ball album. One of the funkiest Prince tunes ever, imo, and I love it! [Edited 7/21/11 21:25pm]

Great song - always had a lot of love for it.
Best Prince song ever? If that's what it is to you, fair play!
But SOTT easily gives it a run for its money in terms of insightful lyrics that are still relevant today - and that was 10 years earlier.
Nice choice though - i think my favourite version is the one on The Beautiful Experience film, where he shave off Mr Hayes' hair!

great song, not sure if its his best though. i feel like he doesnt have one 'best song', but a large group of songs tied for #1 Bogey and Bacall, peanut butter and jelly, Wall being on fucking point, is "classic" dipshit. An iphone is top shelf technology. Get it straight. This thing is 4g. -Wall the great

Mmm, it's a good track, I like it, always have, but that claim of it being his best song ever is a bold one.

It's nowhere near his best ever.

I still get goosebumps when I think of Mayte doing her dance routine to "hooker bitch & ho" then Prince slapped her ass. That was sooo hot!Days of Wild, still one of my top 10, such a good good track! [Edited 8/30/11 1:00am]

You can say what you want but even if it's a good song musically (not even near his best musical efforts), lyrically it's the same as most Prince tracks: talkin' loud and sayin' NOTHIN'.

Out of all the hip-hop tracks that Prince has done, this one is the most convincing.I seriously believe that even the hip-hop lovers would have embraced this track if it had been released.Prince's flow is on point and the song has a great message.
To me,'The Gold Experience' is a silly title for an album. He should have titled it 'Days Of Wild' and this would have been the kickass title track.

This is a silly thread. This is a good song. But there are many that are better.
I would suggest that the person who started this actually go and listen to ALL of the songs Prince released before he released Days of Wild.
Then we'd have the answer.

Yeah, cos of course singing/rapping about respecting women isn't a good message at all, is it?
He should have followed the example of 90% of hip-hop that degraded women.

I have heard all the songs Prince did before Days of Wild and, of course, I exaggerate when I state that it is his best but it ranks high on the list. Prince has too many great songs for there to be only ONE best song, but it is my pick for his best for today. :titlechangeedit: "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Its not silly - if they think that's his best song ever, then it already is to them. Instead of sideswiping, let them have their say and then why not actually have your own say? By that I mean, if its not his best song, say why it isn't and tell us which one you think is his best and why. Don't just tell someone they are wrong and instruct them to go and educate themselves - explain what you think and THEN we might have the answer, eh?
Or is that going to leave you feeling a bit too exposed? ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

OK. It isn't Prince's best song because it's a reaction, albeit one of his best, to the influx on rap into the mainstream. Prince reacted to the late 80s rap influx by recording songs like this one. By the time he recorded Days of Wild he'd got quite good at it. Days of Wild is a good song. One of Prince's best? No.
Prince's best comprises songs that make your eyes roll back inside your head, make your skin grind and burn, make your attention become fixed... Days of Wild... "I don't think so". Sign of the Times, Shockedelica, Hello, I Wonder U, The Exodus Has Begun, Something in the Water, Automatic, When Doves Cry, Anotherloverholenyohead, Love or Money, Alexa de Paris, 17 Days, Just As Long A We're Together, Bambi, When You Were Mine, Housequake, Condition of the Heart, Erotic Cty, How Come You Don't Call Me?, Posessed, Head, Controversy, Dirty Mind, Count The Days, Return of the Bump Squad... etc... All of these are songs that Prince has recorded and they are better than Days of Wild.
Is that ok? | |

Oh, and if you want rap, I would recommend Pope. It's not great, but it's good.

Speak for yourself! Days of Wild DOES make my eyes roll back inside my head, makes my skin grind and burn, makes my attention fixed...AND makes me dance my ass off! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

the studio version is unlistenable
the epic Crystal Ball version is all I need

I think the studio version sounds timeless, because it has this laid back, cool, futuristic techno type sound to it (Kanye and them are hitting that future sound with rap only in the last few years, right? And they still do it in a boring mainstream way). I do think it's one of his best songs. The idea to break the rhythm on those stacatto xylophone hits is cool and original. The beat itself doesn't follow the normal skeletal single snare hit and clear bass drum sound of Prince's songs, or normal funk. It's different. It's like the beat flows, instead of funking.
The live arrangement kind of went back to a normal funk and rap arrangement. Out of the live ones, I think the first one is epic and the best. "Welcome to the Beautiful Experience". My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Perfect - thanks. Entirely agree with your reasoning.
Sorry, didn't mean to jump on you as such, its just you often see people criticising without offering anything valid of their own. You're not necessarily a guilty one but, you know how it is. You see the same thing so many times and then one, isolated message one day just tips it for you.
And, anyway, your more thoughtful retort to my post is so much more revealing and informative that it was certainly worthwhile, eh?

It is phenomenal. As for any recent song he's done recently that can stand up to it, i'd nominate the hard hitting, explosive, attitude filled Ol Skool Company. [Edited 7/22/11 8:55am] This Post is produced, arranged, composed and performed by WetDream

It's probably the best example of a syndrome MANY relatively new, i.e after 1992, songs suffer from: The studio versions are barely listenable but the live versions are phenomenal. One of the best performances he EVER did is the one at the end of the European leg of ONA, esp Paris. That Maceo solo on it is fantastic. Other experience in this category include : Life o'the party, Future Soul Song (antwerp 20ten anyone?), the Love we Make and Emptry Room (there! I said it!)
