XM/Sirius Satellite radio? Online radio? Podcasts ...?

I'm certain this has been asked before...but:

Where is the best place to hear Prince music, aside from buying a cd or dvd?

Traditional radio has just become pretty boring to me, not to mention Prince-free for the most part.

Any stations on XM or Sirius that play him fairly often?

Any podcasts that actually play his music? (I've found plenty of podcasts that advertise him, then don't play any P tunes).

Or for that matter, any radio stations that stream on-line? I live in MN and the few stations that still play him on occasion, aren't that good IMO.

Thanks for any info !! biggrin

The Groove: http://www.siriusxm.com/thegroove

80s on 8: http://www.siriusxm.com/80son8

Other than that, I highly suggest you get a mp3 player and let it play. Prince doesn't get that much airplay like some other catalog artists.

Not unless you're going to pay for live365. There are some Prince stations on there, but they charge for a VIP membership in order to listen to them.

As for other stations across the country, there aren't many stations that's going to really dig into his catalog. Conventional radio is all about what "tests" better, so you will always hear the same Prince songs on different stations.

On the Pop/80s stations, you'll hear WDC, PR, LRC, 1999, etc. On the oldies r&b stations, you'll hear most of the same songs as well as Adore and Do Me Baby. That's pretty much it. I listen to stations across the country and they all play the same 10 or so Prince songs. On the oldies r&b stations, on the weekends, you'll hear songs like DMSR, Sexy Dancer, Controversy and a few others, but that's it.

I'm sorry. sad

Neither of those stations play any Prince to speak of. In fact, XM's "rhythm and blues" stations are pathetic all the way around.

So is their 80's station. Listen to it for a day, and you'll be convinced that the 80's consisted of Def Leppard and British electronic pop.

I wish Prince would be on satellite radio, open the vault, play the live concerts, play the music 24/7 and chat with the fans on air. He'd even get paid.

I couldn't agree more. What better way to get his music/related artists out there? He could enlist some friends like George Clinton, Stevie Wonder, or Lenny Kravitz and have them do the same (live shows, vault songs, etc) and really make it into something special.

No commercials, just a few DJ's and really have fun with it.

The Groove plays Prince music on a regular basis. I listen to them ALL of the time. If u don't hear Prince, you get a LOT of The Time and Vanity 6's "Nasty Girl."

I don't know if you 've noticed, but mostly all of the SiriusXM stations (especially the oldies stations) rotate playlists. They play the same songs for about 2 or 3 weeks, then they switch them out.

I listen to 80s on 8 and 90s on 9 on a regular basis also. No, they don't play tons of MJ, Prince or Madonna because they try too hard to please everyone. I agree that there are a lot of British pop acts on there. My favorite thing on the 80s channel are the countdown shows on the weekends. They give you true variety.

nod

When Thriller 25 came out, it was so cool when SiriusXM did the 24 hour MJ channel. It was always something good. They played material from all of his albums as well as the material with his brothers.

I would LOVE for them to do that with Prince's material. Maybe if he starts issuing remasters we'll get it. cloud9

That would be AWESOME!

Still, hope it never happens, cuz I can't afford satellite radio...

Doubt it would ever happen because of BOOTLEGGING.

I would love to see it, but the cost of promoting and distributing a video channel on tv has to be a lot more than operating an XM/Sirius music station, including getting widespread airplay.

Especially with how much he dislikes videos over straight-up music.

Was wondering if I bought a portable XM/Sirius radio for the car/home, does that include the service or just the radio? I saw one on sale for $45 at Walmart.

(edit: just found this info online:

  • Supports all programming packages currently available on the XM network, along with the Best of Sirius package
  • Requires a monthly service subscription that is sold separately) -XNY
