Proof that Prince wrote A LOT of good stuff since 2004 Musicology A Million Days Cinnamon Girl Call My Name What Do U Want Me to Do Girl On the Couch Dear Mr.Man 3121 Lolita Black Sweat Love Fury The Word The Dance Planet Earth Future Baby Mama Chelsea Rodgers Boom Colonized Mind Dreamer Wall of Berlin Dance 4 Me No More Candy 4 U Elixer Compassion Beginning Endlessly Future Soul Song Sticky Like Glue Lavaux Laydown
THOSE are, at the very least, completely decent/good songs, and I personally think many of them are just plain GREAT. And I'm sure I'm missing other fan favorites (Reflection, $, Somewhere Here On Earth, etc.)
So, say what you want about the "current" Prince. He still can write good songs. With a real promotion/label he could have sold much more.

Phew - I'm glad that's cleared that up then. I've been listening to him for the last 7 years not knowing what's going on, but now I know exactly what to think!
Next..... ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I agree, but I would start in 2001 and include all the songs in The Rainbow Children and many in One Night Alone. Prince indeed continues writing good material, sometimes fantastic, although he is far more irregular than in his golden age.

So....where is the proof?
| |

Of couuuurse he still makes good music, it just depends on people's taste.
Liking an artist is like being in a couple. You get along at the beginning and you share the same taste, views.. and then you grow, you may take different paths, or not, and the success of it is if, after all those years, you can still relate to what the other is saying, thinking, doing.
Some may still relate to Prince's music, some less, that doesn't make it any less good, cause many will still find it good even if others don't.
I really enjoy all of the songs listed above, and more. Just like I really enjoy some of the classics.
Yeah, I love Graffiti Bridge movie, so what? ''Oooooooooooh Montreal, say it!''
If you can't be nice to someone on the net, you probably ain't worth much talking to in real life either.

How do you know these songs were written after 2004? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Personal opinions do not constitute proof of anything. Sorry. Someone else may feel some or all of those songs are wretched.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Of course, but personnal opinions does not proove that a song is good, but it doesn't proove that it's bad either. I mean if you like a song and I don't like it, who's right?
Art is ALL about personnal opinions, only some songs appeal to more people at the same time. Yeah, I love Graffiti Bridge movie, so what? ''Oooooooooooh Montreal, say it!''

Here's an idea: let's check which songs Prince has actively promoted in the past decade and a half. And by that I mean: played in virtually every concert of a tour that followed the album release.
That's how you can measure how Prince thinks about his recent music.
I bet there aren't a dozen songs (outside of TRC's songs) that he's released in the past 15 years that would make such a list. © Bart Van Hemelen

the same can be said about ANY other veteran artist/group.
then again, let Prince do a 3 hours concert for 3000 hardcore fans in a tight club. I'm sure "some" 2004-2010 songs would be played there...

You missed off plenty I personally like, but those crossed out are

Agree.. and many people here complain that he always plays the same hits during his concerts.. so... not many of the old songs get played either... (and not all for religious reasons)
He's actually playing Laydown quite often (and the crowd likes it) he's been doing Musicology very often, heard crimson and clover and colonized mind recently... not that bad when you consider that those shows he's doing right now are for a mass of casual and enthusiatic fans or people who just wants the hits and considering that he knows damn well that the recent albums aren't owned by the majority of the crowd (and that it's his fault )

Well, off all those, the only song I might want to hear again is 3121. The rest are absolutely forgettable, to put it mildly.
Buy, there's something I'd like to ask:
WHY, OH WHY your desperation to 'prove' the (inexistent) point that Prince's post-2004 music is still worth listening to?
Why thread-after-thread trying to embed YOUR PERSONAL VIEWS on everybody's mind?
Does Prince pay you to desperately promote his horrible lastest albums?
and, last but not least, since when personal opinions are a 'proof' of anything? What does a list of titles PROVE?

I quite like the 2004-present era. For me the only real stinker was MPLSoUND. Now it is also true that there haven't been any killer albums during that era (though I would argue that Lotusflow3r comes very close) but I think his recent music has been consistently good. He's not hitting the highs that he once did but with some exceptions he is not hitting many terrible lows either. Ideally much of this "new" music would be performed live. I really believe that if his newer music was given a chance to develop in a live setting that many more fans would connect with it. It seemed like a lot of people really appreciated the Montreux performance of "When I Lay My Hands on U" and I think there are many more songs in his recent catalog waiting to be rediscovered.

I guess it's just a way to respond to all those who try to 'proove' that: -Prince lost his mojo in 1987 -Prince lost his mojo in 1989 -Prince lost his mojo in 1994 -SOTT was Prince's last great album -D&P was Prince latest great album -The Black Album is Prince's last great album -Prince has lost it when he became o(+> -Prince stopped making good music when he left WB
and so on
Everyone is entitled to their opinion.. and nobody can tell someone to dislike or like a song. Yeah, I love Graffiti Bridge movie, so what? ''Oooooooooooh Montreal, say it!''

What's wrong with Musicology (the song)?
also what's right about Dear Mr. Man? Jesus, like.
Anyway threads like this prove that prince is probably right in releasing all this stuff cos prince fans can NEVER agree on which songs are the good ones. Let us do the editing.

Very true. Ask ten fans to whittle Emancipation down to a single, twelve track album and you will get ten very different answers.

There's not one song on your list I'd classify as great! It's either Prince copying himself in a bad way or something that sounds not particular interesting in face of today's music scene.

today's music scene doesn't sound paticuarly intersting.

Lol, so Prince's music doesn't sound particularly interesting in face of today's music scene which doesn't sound particularly interesting anyway. Question: Does this sort of hypothesis make Prince's music look better or even more worse!?
BTW: It's a normal thing that the old generation doesn't appreciate what the new one is doing. The new one creates music with the intention of being different and not being loved by the old one. Another problem is that most people don't really know too many facettes of today's music scene because it's all over the internet and not that easy to find.

And I would put "Te Amo Corazon" above most of the songs on that list. [Edited 7/26/11 16:16pm]

Right. I loved some post-2004 songs like "Black Sweat" for instance btw.
