Honestly, I don't think you should judge a community based on an annual street party. If I were to judge the Irish based on St. Patrick's Day, I'd wonder how the hell they get out of bed every morning.

That said... If you ban sex from a group of people, they're bound to wear their sexuality on their sleeves during their big day of pride. It's a sign to each other and the rest of the world that they CAN be sexual, and it's OK. It's the one day a year many of these guys and girls can hold hands in public and act like straight people at Mardi Gras (and, to be honest, straight people at Mardis Gras are MUCH more sexual than gay people at most pride parades... and they don't have a strong social reason for it, either).

I actually think that the more that homosexuality is accepted in societies (ie: the more that gays can hold hands in public without being stared at, dance together at the prom and marry alongside their straight friends), the less sexualized pride parades will be. If their sex doesn't need to be celebrated publicly ONLY one day a year, there won't be the build-up of tension all year long.

And is sex the only thing that mattes in their lives? I happen to be in a loving, 5-year-long, gay relationship while raising a 10 year-old boy. I work 50 hours a week, as does my partner. And, on the weekends, we do laundry, clean the house, occasionally go out to dinner, visit the museum, and have drinks with friends. We probably have about as much sex as any couple who's been together for 5 years while raising a child and working 50 hours... which is to say... not much.

We're good, upstanding, educated people who've earned the occasional sexy pride parade. You can keep Mardis Gras and St. Patrick's Day if you want. But we'll probably show up to those, too
