HOW COME DAVID BOWIE FANS ARE SMARTER THAN PRINCE FANS? Is a serious question.
Does it mean smart music attracts smart people? Why does Prince attract people who are willing to call themselves FAM or actually turn Jehova? Why do Prince admirers dress up in silly clothes at concerts? Bowie fans have a kewl site as well, like this one, but the posts there are more interesting than the ones I see here lately... Now it is easy to say; GO TO THAT BOWIE SITE THEN. But I love lots of people HERE. And they do not have a hamster cage at Bowie's site... I must admit that I am very happy with our latest fave addition here; Mrdespues. He's fun, not too cynical and he's from OZ! Good things come from OZ. Like koala's, I think. And Tracy. Anyways. I am not saying I am smarter than you. I am not. Well, Smarter than SOME out here anywayz. And smart enough to realise I am not intelligent, unlike SOME. LALA. I just woke up. And I am wide awake. And I want to see how people react to a bold statement like this and see if they can come up with a SMART answer. Or a funny one. Or a blatant rude one, without it being considered FLAME (now THAT is a hard one).

Thanks, YOU WONDERFUL HAMSTER, you. *pat pat* And by the way, I think you can go ahead and call yourself INTELLIGENT, it's allowed for someone like yourself. But before this response turns in to a petting frenzy... ahem... You must have known I was going to click on this thread. I am quite a big Bowie fan also, but Prince is still probably my favourite musician. I agree...Prince attracts basically two extreme types: * intellectuals/artists/musicians (and "would be" intellectuals/artists/musicians) OR * people who call themselves "fams". Enough said.

Nice subject Gooey.
I was asking myself the same question when I saw some of the people at the last concerts. Some seemed to be much more focused on the man than on the music. And then theres that JW-folk flocking in recently... Definitely a difference between the Prince crowd and Bowies one. If you take away the Music there wont be much left of Prince than a strange guy in high heels. Bowie (or others like Elvis Costello) offer a much wider intellectual spectrum than Prince. Unfortunately I just cant listen to his (Bowies) voice. Its giving me the creeps. And their music just doesnt make me move. Did you see the Bowie fans queuing up outside his "Farewell Ziggy Stardust" concert? Remember, Bowie hit the popular stage 11 or so years before Prince. His fans, by extrapolation, will on average be older. It's a great concert, btw, to anyone who hasn't seen it. regards andyf --------

Prince and Bowie are both obviously geniuses. But Bowie is much more of a well-rounded intellectual. He goes out. He has a variety of interests. The Bible's not the only book he reads. When I read his interviews or hear him speak, I feel like I'm getting smarter just absorbing what he says. I don't get that from Prince. Prince likes to perplex and pose questions more. He rarely offers much insight into what makes him tick or inspires him. Bowie can't shut up about it. That's the difference. What type of fan they attract is something else entirely. I love them about equally. [This message was edited Thu Feb 13 2:47:55 PST 2003 by TRON]

But what can you do? And I really tried but I seem to be missing that one gene. Same with Bruce Springsteen. Have to turn off the radio. .......................

I suggest you go buy 'Young Americans' or 'Heathen' and give him another try.
The same thing happened to me with Bjork. At first I couldn't stand her voice. But then as time went on, she became one of my favorites.

I'm a fan of both. I've wondered though, are Bowie fans actually SMARTER or do they just have more practice spewing psudo-intellectual gunk?

Most David Bowie fans I know are a lot older. Prince came a lot later than Bowie remember

They both attract people who like mostly solo, prolific "songwriting genius" types. That's why there are also a ton of Bjork and MJ fans here. Quite possibly, we have a good amount of NIN and Smashing Pumpkins/Zwan fans here too.
I'll give you this, though, Prince fans dressing in purple to a show ain't anywhere near as insane as overweight men painting their bodies and dancing around topless as a football game.
