I've been revisiting my tracklisting of Graffiti Bridge today, which omits all the collaborative stuff (apart from We Can Funk) and the incredibly cheesy title song. I can honestly say it's now my favourite 90's Prince album.

Here's the tracklisting

1. Can't Stop This Feeling I Got

2. New Power Generation

3. The Question of U

4. Elephants and Flowers

5. We Can Funk

6. Joy In Repetition

7. Tick, Tick, Bang

8. Thieves In The Temple (extended version)

9. Still Would Stand All Time

If you listen to the album with this tracklisting, it's an amazingly strong line up of songs. I always felt that the collaborative stuff killed any momentum the album had. For me, the songwriting, the production and the lyrics are outstanding on these songs. If only Prince had spent more time on this album than on the shitty movie, it could have been something outstanding.

I was really disappointed with this album when I first heard it, but in hindsight it has aged really well and deserves a second listen.

The ones I highlighted, are the absolute best tracks on that disc imo - I used to play those particular songs to death. I still count "Joy in Repetition" as one of my favorite Prince songs, period - and I've always loved "Elephants and Flowers". When I was in an emo headspace a few years back, "Question of U" got a lot of play on my iPod, and "Tick Tick Bang" is just fun.

Some of my all-time favorite Prince stuff is on that disc, but, having said that, he did other albums in the 90s that had damn good stuff on them, too. So I think you're gonna have a bit of a debate on your hands, here.

Interesting that you left off We Can Funk. Would you include the (superior) unreleased version?

The Gold Experience is easily his best 90's album.

Followed by prince, and to a lesser extent, Emancipation and Come.

I agree. Without the associates' songs, this would be Prince's best album of the 90's.

Hmm, it's interesting that you note that song as featuring superb production. It is the only song on the album that was remixed by an outside producer (Junior Vasquez). There is also a remix by Kirk Johnson which was featured on the T.E.V.I.N. album. As far as I know the "original" Prince version (with Tevin's vocals) is unreleased. If you are curious it is on Work It, vol. 4. Musically the original version is somewhat similar to "Melody Cool."

Romeoblu

I think Prince was making some great music between 1988-1990.

He seemed to be working on Graffiti Bridge And Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic with the tracklists having many interchageable songs.

My choice of album for 1990 would have been the following titled Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic

Side One

Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic

New Power Generation

Elephants And Flowers

The Grand Progression

The Question Of U

Side Two

Can't Stop This Feeling Got

We Can Funk

Joy In Repetiton

Pink Cashmere

Side 3

Love Machine

If I Had A Harem

The Voice Inside

Melody Cool

Big House

Side 4

Theives In The Temple

God Is Alive

Still Would Stand All Time

Moonbeam Levels

Graffiti Bridge is as released still a great album and my favorite of the 1990's

nod

Never liked GB production anyway, it's soooo 87-88. too retro for a 1990 album...

I'd say that this album, even with the other tracks, is his best of the 90s. MUCH better than D&P and prince ! Gold would be a very close #2, but GB still does it for me, even if some of the songs were 4-5 years old at the time.

Plus, at the time, we had The Time's Pandemonium that came out too, and it was great hearing that album, which was their 3rd best but still quite strong. The Jerk Out video was one of the best ever to come out of the Prince camp!

If we're gonna edit down the best 9-track album of the 90's, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything better than the Gold Experience. GB doesn't hold a candle to this...

1. P Control

2. Endorphinmachine

3. Shhh

4. The Most Beautiful Girl in the World

5. Dolphin

6. Shy

7. Billy Jack Bitch

8. I Hate U

9. Gold

confused ???

that's pretty weak, you need Now and 319 between Dolphin and Shy

IMO Shy sucks and Billy jack bitch too. It doesn't make any sense picking these two lame songs over Now and 319.

Hell yeah it is!!! There's not one song on prince that can hold a candle to Joy In Repetition or The Question Of U!! That album has some decent tracks (And God Created Woman, Love 2 The 9s, Sweet Baby, The Continental, etc), but its best ones can't match the best ones of GB. I think a lot of ppl are letting their hatred for the movie cloud their judgement of the music.

Eh, "Joy In Repetition" and "The Question of U" are great songs but they are much better live than they are on the album. prince is a bit messy but song for song it easily tops Graffiti Bridge. On much of Graffiti Bridge he sounds complacent, even on the lesser prince songs he sounds inspired.

As far as movies go an argument could be made that Graffiti Bridge is superior to 3 Chains O' Gold. wink

JIR is much more enchanting on record than it is live, though I have heard about 2 versions (NYC Aftershow 2002 and Celebration 2002 Night 1) where he absolutely knocks it out of the park, but the rest of his live version are just okay to pretty cool. Still, there's nothing like hearing that haunting drum beat to kick things off. Yes, I know the released version didn't have that, but it could've! lol TQOU may be better live (at least his performances of it from 1990), but the recorded version is still quite killer.

Song-for-song tops GB?? Nah, no way. We might have to get a side-by-side comparison chart goin' to settle this one! lol

There are only two songs on prince that I don't like ("Arrogance" and "The Flow"). Otherwise it is a very solid album. Looking at Graffiti Bridge I actually like all of the songs to some degree (even the title song has some nice guitar in it) but I still think that prince is better. It is somewhat messy but it is also more ambitious and Prince seems to be trying a bit harder. One of the things that bugged me about the '89-'91 era was that there was a sense of adventure that was missing from those albums and it is back on prince. Songs like "The Max," "I Wanna Melt With U" and "The Continental" may not be favourites but they are a slightly different type of song from Prince and I dig that. Then there was "3 Chains O' Gold" which is almost Prince's take on Queen, how can you not love that? As good as Graffiti Bridge may be it is pretty much all stuff that Prince has done before.

If I had to pick a favourite track from either album it might be "Still Would Stand All Time" but I think that prince hits more highs and stays there longer than Graffiti Bridge.

Gosh, I had forgotten how great that last track on prince is, it really does blow "New Power Generation (Pt. II)" out of the water.

Okay, so now you wanna go there, eh? Prepare the THROW DOWN!!!! lol

How on earth do you think that The Morning Papers is better than The Question Of U???? That's just insane. One's a classic that's adored by the hardcores and STILL gets played by the man to this day. And the other is "The Morning Papers". And you honestly think MNIP is better than Can't Stop...? Is it the samples of his clearly better songs in the beginning that make it better, cuz that would have to be the ONLY reason?!?! Lol!

Just to be clear your gripe is with dandeeland and not me. wink

I do think that "The Morning Papers" is a great rock track but not quite as good as "The Question of U." At the risk of drawing your ire I do think that "The Question of U" is ever so slightly overrated.

I would also probably agree that "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" is a better song that "My Name Is Prince." Probably. I do need to leave myself a little wiggle room.

As you can see, GB wins hands down, 10-6 (I took NPG Pt. II out of the equation)! lol That's just comparing them track by track, but I definitely do like some of the songs on prince that lost, though. I still like Sweet Baby, Sexy MF, and Damn U. I just felt the ones they were up against on GB were that much better! GB just had more ooomph and power than prince , for me. But, one man's/woman's junk is another man's/woman's treasure.

But you're still wrong.... wink

Um, because it IS his take on Queen. He should do himself and worry about doing more of his own style than emulating Queen. I'm not saying 3 Chains is a bad song, but Still Would Stand All Time just has more heart and emotion than that one.

One thing I'll say about prince is that after the HUGE disappointment that was D&P, it was a welcome change. But the reason why D&P was such a huge disappointment for me was that it came after GB, which was extremely funky and had soul. Then, he comes out with the lifeless, NPG-laden D&P album?? Ugh. So, prince was a step up from its predecessor, but still didn't build on my excitement of GB from 2 years prior. I honestly think Prince was so embarrassed of GB's movie failure that he decided to scrap everything from that period (including the sounds of the album) and start completely fresh (and dry). disbelief

Well, as far as I know he only did a Queen sounding song that one time. Thirty years and over thirty albums, I can forgive him for copping another artists sound that one time. lol

I think I found some common ground with you. I don't like Diamonds and Pearls either. At least we found one thing to agree on. wink
