Why was Days Of Wild missing from the final released Gold Experience album ? & Prince versus Blur 1995 Hi, sorry if this is "fact common known"...
After this Brit awards in (Feb./March?) 1995, Prince was on the front page of New Musical Express:
the tracklist included Days Of Wild, but with a sour comment from the reviewer, he wrote something like Days Of Wild was the worst track on the album, a very bad rap attemt - something like that.
MAYBE - at least that's what I think - this was the reason Prince decided to remove this funky track from TGE...

I was so disappointed that this song wasn't included on the album.I think it's Prince's best, most convincing hip-hop number. It puts "P Control" to shame.

This from http://www.princevault.co...ys_Of_Wild
"This studio version was included as the sixth track on an untitled early-1994 album (likely an early configuration of The Gold Experience). It was then included as the fourth track (second song) on a March, 1994 configuration of The Gold Experience, and was kept as the fourth track (second song) on a May, 1994 configuration, as well as the seventh track (fifth song) on a 13 October, 1994 configuration. It was removed for the final release, with little explanation. Mayte was quoted as saying Prince had "other plans" for the track, but it is unclear what these plans were."

Strange cuz NME have Days Of Wild as the 5th track, see pic above.
But a NME typo:.... "Days Of Wind"...

(Slightly off topic) I remember a story (possibly from the NME) about the Brits that year, apparently Dave Rowntree and other people sat at the Blur table began throwing bread rolls at Prince's table after his "perfectly free" speech. Later, Rowntree and other Blur members turned up at one of Prince's aftershows at the Astoria(?) and wanted to gain entry. Prince ordered security not to let them in but before they were turned away Blur were handed a cardboard box, when Rowntree opened the box it contained 6 bread rolls.
^I don't know how true that story is but it's a good one. [Edited 7/21/11 7:12am]

I agree. I have a feeling that he probably thought the same thing.

before it came out, prince said he was never going to release it... so someone put together a tape and we made copies and mailed them to each other. I made 5 copies and mailed them out 2 to the UK. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Yes,
I the studio version too.
I think the first time I heard it was The Beautiful Experience tv special in the fall of 1994,
Shown on Danish DR1 TV - I was really trippin to this track......
Of course it's fantastic played live, but the studio version rocks too.
One of the best tracks of the 1990's. Prince 4Ever.

I disagree that it's weak and whimpy, I think it had a more techno and laid back "too cool for school vibe". It wasn't trying to be shouting and belting out a rap, it was more like the attitude that he was sitting on a throne chilled out and transmitting from the future.
Out of the live ones I've heard, the original live one is the best, but has a completely different attitude than the studio one, it's belted out loud and big.
I think it got more and more boring as the live one became a standard of the years, because it floated somewhere in between the two extremes and got more conventional on the arrangement.
He should have had the studio version on Gold, that album would be that much better in my opinion. Like really cool. Take out We March, and put in "Days of Wild". My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Can't you get the images any bigger? I'm sure folks on Mars would like to read the article, too. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Your Princevault quote is pretty much on point (well, Princevault IS very reliable,so... ) ...but I think there was an article or rather an interview in Uptown magazine where a guy I knew back then (Andre) interviewed Mayte and she said something in the vein of "Prince wasn´t very happy with the studio versions because none of them captured the energy of the live version", something to that effect. I think the Princevault guys are referring to that interview. But I don´t remember the issue and I can´t look it up right now. And he´s right.....the live versions DO sound better than the studio version. My favorite version is the one from "The Beautiful Experience" . The same can be said about "Now!".
I think the Gold Experience, as good as it is, could have been a much stronger album. The cover art looked much better in its original form as seen on the Letterman show, and the original configuration was better, too. The production is a tad too sterile for my taste, and most fans were already spoiled by hearing the very powerful live renditions way before the album was finally released. I would love to hear that bootleg with the rawer sounding, unpolished versions of the Gold Experience songs. That leak was almost a decade ago and I still haven´t found those rawer sounding takes. Also would love to hear the rock version of "Space". " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

My guess is that, in addition to Prince preferring the live version of DoW, he didn't want to give the song to WB. Prince has said that The Gold Experience was made by his "semi-free self". By the time WB agreed to release it, Prince was looking forward to being totally free. I always thought he considered the song extra special and wanted to keep it for himself, i.e., own the master.
Mayte said he had other plans for the song, and he did end up releasing it himself, twice: the Crystal Ball version, and the Montreal single. Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com

I think this is the reason too, pure speculation, but maybe this is why there's only been a rehersal version of Rebirth Of The Flesh released too.

Because the only Minneapolis rapper worse than Tony M. is Prince. It might be his best rap song, but that's kind of like me releasing my best rap song—nobody should have to suffer through it.
