What you mean because it sounds a bit beatlesy? It does actually, it reminds me of Penny Lane a bit.

It was actually mentioned many times in the media at the time that Around the World in a Day was Prince's "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"

Raspberry beret does not have this hippie psychadelic flavour as Paisley Park and most of the album, therefore was more mainstream and for that reason it was probably the first single in the US. I don't think that Paisley Park was considered radio friendly in enough in the US.

Exactly.

Paisley Park is NOT "fonkey", but it is a great song. cool

To me it has understated elements of funk coursing through its veins. The timing of the finger cymbals, for example. Slow, psychedelic funk. [Edited 7/19/11 20:57pm]

If you've heard the version he played at some of the One Nite Alone soundchecks, he brought out a more funked up, guitar-driven flavor. I have the feeling he has a reworked studio version of this track laying around that I'm sure we'll never get to hear

If it breaks when it bends, you better not put it in.

Just listen to it on your own in the dark. It's amazing.. So is Condition of the heart. Fantastic in my opinion.

Condition is my other favorite from ATWIAD. When I met Prince, I told him "Condition Of The Heart" was my favorite. In truth, I've now decided "Paisley Park" is my all time favorite.

Yeah, I love this song, underrated and best of the album for me. I was hoping he would play this when I saw him live this week, but I don't think he ever plays this anymore. Or does he?

It was my favorite from the album at the time it came out. I remember when ATWIAD first came out, and Raspberry Beret hadn't yet been released as a single, our local radio station chose Paisley Park as the song to play.

The best live version of this song, hands down, is the one he and The (Counter)Revolution did at First Ave on May 3, 1986. It's the Parade warmup show. I just LOVE this version and the groove that goes on for about 2-3 minutes at the end there just makes me get lost in another time and space. I'mma have to go listen to that shit right now.... music
