Did Prince ever Comment on MORRIS DAY's solo work? I wonder if Prince ever commented on Morris's "The Color of Success" or "Day-Dreaming"?
During this time, Morris and Prince were definitely on the OUTS, and Morris was out there standing on his own, trying to prove himself. For a while there, it looked like he might even usurp Prince..
Was Prince impressed? | |

I remember him saying once in concert about Morris's song "The Oak Tree"... "We gonna chop down this Oak Tree and make a wooden leg out of it." which was pretty funny.

Yeah he said that during the 'live' A Love Bizarre video

Yes he said "Thank God I had nothing to do with it"!!!
That said I do quite like his music but it sounds pretty dated now, I esp like "Oak Tree" its very funny and funky.

Morris should keep doing one off songs about new dances until some kids show like Gabba Gabba finally grabs him. It's a good niche.

Morris Day solo effort is some of the weakest shit I've ever heard from an artists that I actually enjoy atleast with The Time. He would have been a bigger hit probably if he just made some real funky shit with himself on drums and that swaggedy swag of his.

FISHNET and to a certain extent, OAK TREE are two pretty good songs. I wish Morris had teamed up with the rest of The Time, let Jimmy/Terry produce it to see where it could go. I think that FISHNET showed that they could jam on an original song and still sound like The Time. If Prince had allowed the band to work on their own stuff after Purple Rain and remained the Executive Producer so he could oversee it, we might have many albums of great music. Flyte Tyme music has shown that they are talented hit writers, so it would have made perfect sense... but Prince stopped asking for my advice back in 1989, and see where that got him! The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. I actually remembered seeing that comment about "Oak Tree" in a magazine my sister was reading at the time (Right On).
Anyways, "Fishnet" was the only classic Morris had after going solo.

I remeber the 1st time I saw that video, I was like "wait a minute, was that a reference to MD?" Was a total smack in the face
However I like Fishnet, and I think Morris in one cool brotha "How Can I Stand To..Stay Where I Am? Poor Butterfly Who..Dont Understand." P

I do remember hearing that Prince only dug and respected Jesse's work. That's why he recorded "Shockadelica" originally for Jesse.

What do you mean? The Quiet Storm program where I live still plays Don't Wait For Me. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I enjoy Morris's solo work a lot, but I don't think it ever looked like that.

I recall Prince stating he made "shocadelica" because "it was a shame JJ didnt have a song for the title of his album".... Stand Up! Everybody, this is your life!

I always liked "Love Is A Game" from the Daydreaming album. I can't remember the last time I heard it on the Quiet Storm on WHUR, but it's been a minute. Anyway, I always felt this was his best solo slow jam.

"Jerome. Somebody told me they gotta new dance here. What's the name of it?" "Oak Tree." "The Oak Tree?" "Oak Tree." "How do you do it?" Jerome bounces around (in rhythm) looking like he suffers from some sort of palsey. "Oh I'm sorry. We're gonna have to chop that down this evening. We're gonna chop that down and make a wooden leg out of it... FELLAS CHOP!" Band blasts a one timer, and Jerome, Brooks, and Wally pantomime chopping down a tree. "CHOP ONE MORE TIME!" Blast. "AGAIN!" Blast. "AGAIN!" Blast.
Then Jerome, Wally, Brooks, Sheila and Prince go into the wooden leg dance (Sheila messed up on one small part of it).
However about a year and a half to two years later, Terry, Jimmy, and Morris put a Fishnet on that wooden leg. Prince had no comment about that. Mainly because it was a pretty good cut.

I think Day's solo work on the first two albums was very stong. Totally in keeping with MPLS.
Oak Tree, Color of Success, Love Sign, Daydreaming, Yo Love (My favourite), Fishnet, A Mans Pride, Are you ready

Right, he submitted the song to Jesse. Jesse rejected it and he put the song out himself to make it as if Jesse was biting from him as far as the name "Shockadelica".

The whole Color Of..was jammin. Love Addiction is so great to me as a pop diddy. Reminds me of Private Joy sort of.

He probably commented on it as much as everyone else in the world did, i.e., not at all.

I think Morris is often taken for granted as a vocalist. Not to be controversial, but honestly Prince can't match Morris's tenor. [Edited 7/16/11 21:17pm]

I USED to think that I only listened to Morris Day or The Time only as a substitute for Prince (or more accurately, just because I liked Prince), but I now know that I like Morris Day all around much, much better. [Edited 7/16/11 17:32pm]

Hearing "Girl" made me realize that. Morris can bring it when it's necessary in that degree.

Morris had some KILLER solo cuts! I love the title track to "Daydreaming" and "Are You Ready" (both the original version and the 'Minneapolis Mix')
