i want prince to experiment with music again... as much as i liked his last album...good but not great....i want to see prince stretch myself again musically.....do something a bit different...maybe it wont work...maybe he isnt capable of surprising us any more but i would like him to try...he is a genius after all and he may surprise himself with what he comes up with...

I really like the way SOTT sounds and much of that was to do with the fact that Paisley Park wasn't finished and Prince was making do and messing around with sounds... hence Ballad and If I Was (not the Midge Ure song). An amount of my complaint re Prince's work since has been the quality of the production. The finished Paisley Park made Prince's work sound too polished, in my opinion, and much of Prince's charm and attraction became lost in the pristine quality of Pailey Park's production.
I don't want Prince to experiment... I'd quite like him just to go a little bit retro: remember where his roots are and remember the desire and drive that put him behind a guitar and in front of a microphone, in the first place.
Having said that... he's still prooving to be shit hot at what he does, live, anyway.
Ah, we are the blessed.
He is really rather magnificent... but we want him to be better.

Back then, I hoped Xpectation, C-Note & and N.E.W.S. were the beginning of something...
I hope P will come back to xperimental stuff like the 3 albums above, or The War, 16 and Kamasutra one day...

I'm thinking most of the fans don't want him to experiment in new territory, but on the last few albums he has a variety of genre explorations. Maybe not in a really crazy blended way like on Black Album or Lovesexy.
The vibe of "Compassion" is like a retro 70's musical song like something from a stage production, "Beginning Endlessly" has a type of synth sound that was almost like Van Halen or Rush, and "Everybody Loves Me" was a joking sarcastic song that again had a very 70's analog synth tv show theme vibe. "Lay it Down" enters into that mainstream arena rap sound like some Prince pop version of an old Lil Wayne song.
"Digital Garden", "Illusion Coma Pimp and Circumstance", "3121", "Planet Earth".... oh, I gotta run. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I think Prince had a fairly long run with innovations and experimentations .. longer than David Bowie, Stevie Wonder or [insert your own favorite other musician].
From here (or from an arguable period of time ago) Prince will go the route of many greats before and after him: He carved his very own niché in music history. But now he doesn't care how big a niché he's making .. he's more into rearranging the funiture in it, making it comfy and such.
Prince ain't no God, nor is he super human or homo superiour in any way. He's just a man. A little, ordinary man. Admitting that will propably 1) free up the cpu of fans waiting for the second coming of something purple and 2) make his contributions to music that more impressive, like, "an ordinary guy made that?".
So .. I too want Prince to experiment again, but I don't think he can - not as long as he doesn't seem to own up to his age (yeah, bold statement, I know). He would make something neo-Prince, rather than something new-Prince. I doubt Prince will ever take hints from someone like David Byrne.
And in one sentence: As long as Prince is nostalgic (see "live covers" threads), he won't move forwards.

Well last time he did an experimental album was probably TRC and NEWS and look how the fans reacted to those?!?! [Edited 8/12/11 7:13am]

I'm with you.
It's why I can appreciate albums like The Rainbow Children or C-NOTE because they were musically unexpected yet felt really inspired. He made the music he wanted to without really giving a shit about the reception.

I quite like N.E.W.S, but I am partial to a little post-rock so that's no surprise. The problem with Prince doing instrumentals is that his voice is as powerful as any instrument and it seems just a bit of a waste if he doesn't sing.

Im with you Bob...he's getting lazy, all this mish mash of sounds is neither here or there. After a first listen i wanna go fuck that was good...Prince's recent albums leave me unfulfilled, yes!!...there's snippets of brilliance, but he set the bar on which he will always be judged. And that bar is due a raise...

i wouldnt mind him doing another 'rainbow children' style album but without the religious dogma and darth vader voice....another organic album with weird soundscapes would be something i could really dig...he has had a few hit albums over the last 7 years so time to go weird again...

-I have a degree in Broadcasting (radio + TV), we had to learn everything. -I was pretty good. -Experimenting is fun!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
so basically we want, musically a new TRC without the bull shit ramblings...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
TRC would have been excellent if he got rid of the rather bigoted narration. It just seemed too weird and dogmatic to me to like and its not an album you can play to your friends without them thinking "wtf".
I'm not sure I trust him to do another album of that ilk LOL.

Thank you Blackbob!!!
I wish he experimented too. I love all his old "weird" music. Or at least what I thought was interesting and weird. i.e. Tambourine, Love Song, Something In The Water.
I would always look forward to weird sounds or weird sounding instruments.

This sounds like so many postings of late. 'I want Prince to what he did before but not the way he'd do it now.' Find what you like in what's been released and focus on that as opposed everything you didn't like about the releases. I only liked about 3 songs on Rainbow Children and hence rarely play it and don't dwell too much on it either. I'd rather focus on the music he's done since that I did like more.
Also what the heck is an 'organic album' and what 'weird soundscapes' are you talking about exactly? When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Finally somebody actually acknowledges that we all may have different tastes or even entirely different perceptions of Prince's music. That's the most thought out post ever written on here hands down! Eh he don't need to if he don't want to. Guess he's "past that stage".

I wasn't here on this board when those two came out but I can guess the responses wasn't actually positive.

^- So maybe Prince wants to know what we the consumer wants to do? Do we want to dance, or not? The whole market includes a "black market", so maybe we the consumer can help mold these teenagers with Prince's music? -We need a new album.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The response was a bit like 'WTF' although you had some die-hard lovers of TRC as well as the haters. For me I liked it musically but I hated the narration and I could not get past that so I don't really see it as a high point. NEWS was ok but I remember fans at the time were worried he had stopped doing albums with vocals as everything around that time seemed to be instrumental/jazz related (CNOTE and Xpectation had only recently just been released via the NPGMC too). organic...live instruments...no plastic keyboard sounds or fake horns...i hate most of that stuff...john blackwell on the drums and prince playing real instruments...i didnt like everything on the rainbow children either but the 'sound' he has on that album is amazing...give me this sound any day over the stuff on ' mplsound ' . soundscapes...well you have ' digital garden ' and ' the sensual everafter ' and stuff like lotus...i would like him to explore this a bit more...i dont want him to do another ' news ' type album but just explore that type of music a bit more...

^- -Prince is Melody Cool! -All now that he really has to do is find out what instruments we want to hear. -We want bass licks galore for sure.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I think there's needs to be clarification here with what experimental is... the "Bob George" low pitched voice on "Rainbow Children" along with it's Jehovah centric narrative was experimental.
Using real horns and old school bass licks and John Blackwell on drums is going more traditional or conservative in terms of sound. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Prince's idea of "experimentation" was what was ultimately MPLSound. Remember in that LA Times interview when he said he was doing a bunch of experimenting using Pro Tools, as he supposedly had to be recently talked into using it by Terry Lewis?
Yeah, that's his bullshit idea these days of experimenting. So, as Vitriol stated, I wouldn't hold my breath.
