I own only four of the Top 100.

The non-Prince titles are:

'Straight Out of Brooklyn' at 50 (In all fairness this was an independent film debut. But it's a good movie.)

'Shaft' at 97. I'm a Jeffrey Wright fan.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

1. Black lists irk me. Segregation's over.

2. The list is jacked up. If you want to rip films like Soul Plane, list it with the American Pie franchise, not serious indie releases.

3. November 4, 1991, in the basement of the Mall of America, blacks folks voted in our quarterly national secret convention to disown Graffiti Bridge -- something about it managing to squander the acting talents of both Mavis and Jellybean. Oh, and how the Tick, Tick, Bang performance set back cinematic depictions of black manhood by a solid 30 years.

It really is, so was Coonskin. Whoever made that list needs to be knocked with some sense.

That being said, 'Soul Plane" shoulda been wearing that crown, not no Graffiti Bridge, at least the latter has some redeeming qualities.

it's ironic that they refer to Graffiti Bridge as a "black movie".I remember the BET movie critic reviewing this film and she was extremely harsh. She complained that "there isn't a woman in this film that is browner than a paper bag".Does anyone remember that segment? She recommended that folks go out and buy the CD and ignore the film altogether.

Under The Cherry Moon is at #42.

There's a hundred low budget black films as bad as GB, Booty Call for one. Thin Line Between Love and Hate? Or that one where Master P is selling cellphones?

How is Bagger Vance a black movie? I haven't seen the film, but from the clips I've seen, the Fresh Prince is the only black person in it. lol

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Segregation's over.

If that's the case, why is there a Latin Grammys, BET, Telemundo, the channel that shows Chinese soap operas, the station that shows Bollywood music videos, etc? Why does the regular networks (US) programming feature mostly white folks?

Is that segregation or variety? We all don't have to like the same thing? It's nice to have options.

Someone said it was a glorified music video and I'd have to agree. It wasn't even what I'd call a film in the same way Purple Rain was.

My second point speaks to your question. My main issue is with grouping films Just because they have black characters.

By this listmaker's rationale, "Watermelon Man" would share a space with "Malcolm X" or "The Preacher's Wife."

To make my point clearer, that's like grouping "Tess," "Murder by Death" and "Basic Instinct." The race-based context is weak, at best.

Movie Review

Graffiti Bridge (1991)

EW's GRADE
D-

Details Movie Rated: PG-13; Genres: Drama, Musical; With: Morris Day and Prince

Prince is clearly among the most influential and talented pop figures of the last several years, but his latest feature vehicle, Graffiti Bridge, written and directed by the diminutive auteur himself, proves only that as a filmmaker, he's a great musician. A loose sequel to the far superior Purple Rain, it's set in a sort of arrested male adolescent fantasyland; all the people in the picture are young, fashionably dressed, and able to spend all their time listening to live music at MTV-style nightclubs where guys don't drink or take drugs or do much of anything except treat their girlfriends like hookers. There's a flimsy plot about a rivalry between the star and the still-amusing Morris Day (of the funk band the Time), and an incomprehensible subplot about a woman who is either an angel or a groupie. But none of it makes any sense whatsoever, and Prince's direction (forget his performance — one long ''I'm a sensitive guy in pain'' pout) is devoid of energy, even in the musical numbers that are (theoretically) the reason you're watching this. In fact, the staging is so lethargic you'll be hard-pressed to remember how good these songs sounded on CD.

quoting something someone once told me about Graffiti Bridge...........

it is more like a music video that flows than a movie.... and that's exactly how i see it smile

cool

and it cant b the worst cause it has amazing music which could easily rank it as one of the coolest nod

Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

it really is just a longform music video as opposed to a genuine 'movie'.Prince should have released it straight to video (which Warners suggested) and it would have worked as a companion piece with the album.Sorta like 'Three Chains O Gold' which helped to explain the 'Symbol' CD.

There are so many more worst than that, but yeah I agree Graffiti Bridge is a bad advertisement for black people. Many Blaxploitation movies are worse, but at least they had some types of self empowerment in them. Graffiti Bridge is crass Materialism and bad crass materialism at that. To me the best Black Movie will always be X from 1993, followed closely by Glory and then the miniseries Roots, (Its sad these were all 20 -30 years ago) and i was also fond of "The Color Purple" that was an intense movie, because people could relate to the pain Celie had to endure with Mister. I don't even count GB as a Black Movie as its more an extended montage of music videos and Prince dosen't look very black and Ingrid Chavez is White. Mostly its more just a bad music movie. Bad black movies, I think Friday Foster, Scream Blacula Scream, Abby and Boss Nigger are some derivative cliche laden stereotypical blaxploitation shit.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
