That has nothing to do with being 'underrated' though.
He proabaly used the wrong word for it. |

'Shockadelica is so damn underrated'
Umm.. by who ??
I have never heard a bad word about the track, just about everyone agrees it is great so who exactly is it underrated by ?
Just because u haven't heard a bad thing about the track dosen't mean it's not underrated. It's definitely not as known as Erotic City, She's always in my hair or 17 days . Just look up the song on youtube and you'll notice that it got only 15 000 views. Erotic city has about 500 000, She's always in my hair and 17 days got 50 000. and they were all put up about a year ago. I dont think It's one of his big b-sides in terms of popularity but it should be. Maybe looking at youtube numbers isn't the right way to do it but i'd would be surprised if it was as known as the other b sides i mentioned.

Those were b-sides to popular singles. Shockadelica was a b-side to a single that not that many people bought. So fans know it, and probably already have it, so they don't need to go to YouTube to hear it. None of that makes it underrated. It just means most people don't know about it. |

I think you can't underrate something that you've never had a chance to rate in the first place.
Anywho, who cares about a semantic debate? Shockadelica is awesome. |

...and Justin B., Nelly, Eminem, 50 Cent, Rihanna, etc. has zillions of views and they were put up five hours ago. ok, confession. maybe i never got IN to the song. I only had it on my b-sides from The Hits box set and my aunt took that with her to NY 15 years ago. so i think i've only listened to it once, and not even in its entirety. i remember it only vaguely and thinking that unlike many of his other B-sides, this DESERVED to be one. willing to give it another chance after all the stellar reviews, but no plans to buy a new box set. |

it is, just like Power Fantastic This comes as news to me!!! I could've sworn "Power Fantastic" was about Miles Davis' heroin use. Hard to imagine such a poignant song could be about jacking off. Any sources to back that up? |

Shockadelica is such a perfect song. And it's the perfect b-side.
It's maybe lost on fans born after 1989 how singles have an A side and B side (?), - how two songs play ball with each other, and how inspired it was to have If I Was Your Girlfriend be paired with Shockadelica.

Just imagine how Jesse Johnson felt who was about to release an album of the same name and Prince sent him this song and told him to put it on his album. When Jesse was concerned that the Prince connection would take away from it being a Jesse Johnson album Prince said he would release it if Jesse did not use it....and there lies history.
I would love to hear Jesse cover this song.
But yes, one of the greatest funk rock songs Prince has done. You don't know funk if you don't like this song. Lyrically it's off the hook!
I think Jesse Johnson said they use that word a lot to describe the look of a woman. Since Jesse was from IL, I am not sure if it was amoung his younger years or Princes. But now that I think about it, someone (Prince or Jesse) had to of used the word first. Who was it? Anyone know?
I think Jesse came up with the title, and Prince being his devious self, tried to hog up the credit by releasing the song right before Jesse's album.
But I remember from reading DMSR that Troy Beyer influenced the story in the lyrics. That for whatever reason, she "spooked" Prince. I don't know.
Here's the story that I remember hearing (I never heard of Jesse being offered the song):
Prince heard news of Jesse's album coming out entitled "Shockadelica". He was interested in hearing the title track, but was taken aback that there was no title track (most of Prince's albums have a title track as either the first or last song of the album). He said that title is just too good to not have a song named after it. Prince then took the title and made his own song, completely separate from Jesse Johnson's project -- i.e. no ties whatsoever.

I once (in 1988) played SOTT era stuff for a musician I knew that hated Prince. He thought Housequake was cool, but when he heard Shockedelica he said, why's he recycling the beat?
I should have said, why's all the Rush songs you used to worship (from middle school) all have the same beat? |
