Why?

By that rule of thumb you should be happy with TRC and you aren't...

let's see

I'm not happy because with TRC

-lack of hits, truly memorable songs

-the album is too long

-bullshit lyrics

-darth vader voice

that said, I own the album and it's def the most interesting thing he released between TGE and Musicology...

but that doesn't answer why you don't like/own Lotus, after all it's an organic, almost jazzy rock album with some gems...

I can see why you hate "plastic pop" like 3121 or MPLS, but Lotus??? confuse

I had a night in last week and had a few beers and popped in one of my misc P dvds

it was ALL his live TV appearances between 1997-1999

DAMN it is VERY rare for me to critiscize my main man but its like watching another artist

he looks fucking lost..and having trouble dealing with his waning stardom and inspiration

interesting. i don't like his *look* for some of this time period (too thin, too pale). and the released music wasn't that great. but there were a couple of live tv performances that were good:

1. cafe de paris, august 28, 1998. the guitar that he plays for the intro to sweet thing ... amazing. and the beautiful strange part of the video is also top notch. now granted i haven't seen the whole thing, so those rest might not be as good.

2. leno, come on, remix. but i guess you already mentioned that.

hmm. that's only 2. you have a point. lol

He lost it with 1999: The New Master. What the fuck was that shit?

It was a clear message to WB. "Leave my catalog alone or there will be more like this. (The new master)

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I partially blame that performance for why I found Newpower Soul to be such a disappointment. The album version is ok but he totally nailed it live. I loved the guitar line and when I heard the weak keyboard on the studio version I was quite let down by it.

Shockedelicus

Every artist loses their mojo after a while, it's really not that big a deal.

He only lost his musical mojo in 1999 imo.

Yes, New Power Soul is well below standards but it still contains some great tunes that stand up to the rest of his career, and most of the live performances 1997/1998 were great.

Rave Un2 The Year 2000 and 1999: The New Master however, have to be the most embarrassing moments of his career. ill disbelief

I agree 100%!! I actually thought the sinbad appearance was amazing - as I did the entire "Jam of the Year Tour" that year. NPS was dissapointing because of the plastic production, departing from the raw, edgy "Exodus" sound -- I attribute this to Larry Graham because NPS included some exodus b-sides (including the Big City Mix) until Prince stopped swearing and took it out - he probably cleaned up the whole album.

1999 and 2000 were just deplorable and embarrasing.
