Xenophobia is my favorite. However, I like the Madhouse material also.

Attempt is exactly the right word. Prince has no training and very little experience playing jazz. Jazz is not like rock, funk or the blues. You don't just wake up and start playing jazz one day just like you don't wake up and decide to wirte a novel just because you're the best blogger in the world. It is very complex it takes thinking. You don't just FEEL jazz. That comes only after YEARS of practice and study. Prince can make jazz-like noises and throw a little jazz-ish flavor on his conventional pop music, but that is totally different than jazz. Music is a language. Prince is great at a number of musical languages, but jazz is not one he's spent a lot of quality time learning. He knows a few words and phrases, but just because you can speak English, Spanish, Italian and French doens't mean you can just roll out of bed and start spewing Japanese. Trust me on this. I am a serious student of music and I've studied jazz at one of the best, (if not THE best) jazz school in the world. You want to know who can play jazz but chooses to write contemporary songs instead? One of my former classmates - Norah Jones. Prince is a serious musician in many areas, but when it comes to jazz, (as someone who knows the langauge) he is a dilettante - and that's AT BEST.

I don't mind that he throws that spice into his music, though. That would be like complaining, (as many Indian classical musicians do) that the Beatles had no business adding sitar to their music.

Jazz is basically a dead genre as people don't want it to change. I think experimentation is a must, but adding some pseudo-jazz noodling to your rock/funk/pop whatever isn't advancing jazz, it's advancing what he's doing at the moment. Jazz remains a dying artform because most folks in the popular music realm haven't the time to devote to something that will only cost them money, not make it. Calling Prince a jazz musican is like calling Bill Joel a classical composer. Both of them may think they are, but we know better...

I more or less agree. Prince doesn't really do jazz. He does (smooth) jazz-like stuff, but not jazz per se.

I like it all, except the 2nd madhouse 24 done in the early 90's. I think NEWS is my favorite and the rainbow children if you count that too.

Whether the purist would call any of these "jazz" or not, I like:

When The Lights Go Down
Desire
Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)
Damn U
Ballad of Dorothy Parker

I was pretty excited several years ago when Bob Belden produced that jazz tribute, but was disappointed when I heard the record. Herbie Hancock's cover of Thieves In The Temple is great, as well as Steven Bernstein's Darling Nikki. It would be great to more along the lines of those two examples from some top notch jazz players. I think most of Prince best jazz inflected works are largely due to the input of Mr. Eric Leeds. I hope they work together again soon.
