I had listened to Prince for years and this had never bothered me. Then my girlfriend started listening to more of his stuff before we went down to London for the ONA tour. She HATES it when he screeches during songs.

Example .. the last chorus of Kiss 'aint no particular sign I'm more compatible with' .. he stops singing and starts really screeching.

Another example ...The Beautiful Ones - last chorus again 'Baby baby baby listen to me'.

And another ... Darling Nikki - 'Your darling little Prince wanna grind grind grind'.

Infact, throughout his music ... he does it all the time. And I reckon my girlfriend's right, in at least some of the songs, it comes close to spoiling the song.

Anyone agree??

Prince Screeches too much


I know just the other day I asked him: "do you wanna race" he said: "yea" and screeched off on my ass, if ya'll see him tell him I looking for him for that second race....

No, Prince doesn't screech enough.

Kinda reminds me of those big fat black women singing gospel. They be hollerin' and screamin' 'bout God.
I want them to sing the song first and throw in juss a lil' screech now and then like you do hotsauce and spices in a dish. Too much hollerin', screamin', and screechin' is like havin' a whole plate of nothin' but hotsauce and spices.
Gets folks all riled and worked up emotionally but they ain't sayin'/singin' nothin'.

btw, I don't mind Prince's screeching. But, in my opinion his warm and fuzzy falsetto and bangin' bass are the highlights of his vocal range.

It's the same reason I love both of Roger Daltrey's screeches in "Won't Get Fooled Again," they're crescendos after the buildup. V-e-r-y necessary.

Oh and really I should correct - it is NOT screeching. It is all about emotion. Those times mentioned during Kiss, Beautiful 1's and Darlin' Nikki is all about showing pure emotion and not being able to contain yourself.

Nah man, love the screeches as much as all those other Prince-specific sounds (gotta love those funky squeals...think "Let's Work" or "Private Joy") Anyway, if your girlfriend hates the screeches, NEVER play "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" (the track not the album). I just tried to get into this album again and I forgot how wild those (screams?, screeches?) at the end of the song are. THAT shit is intense. One of the few things I like on that album.
