Homemade Deluxe Editions Unfortunately, I can't share where these can be obtained, but I'm wondering if anyone else is listening to the Prince: Homemade Deluxe Editions?
Basically a fan [thank you!] is doing with Prince, what "Purple Chick" did with The Beatles, compile the best available vinyl rip, along with all of the circulating outtakes, B-sides, demos, etc. in a Deluxe Edition! The Sign O' the Times is 7 discs!

The bonus material are all supposed to be the best circulating versions. They are distributed as lossless flac. "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

Uhm, everyone?
I think I've seen these on a blog once, If you enjoy these fan comps great - but it's not like there's anything new here - anyone can do the same with a spare 5 minutes and an iTunes playlist - no doubt most of us have

They should redo "Dirty Mind", "Controvery", "1999", and "Purple Rain" with the latest vinyl releases. Other than that, I guess it's a cool project.
"Prince" and "Graffiti Bridge" could be interesting, as they probably include the slightly different versions of "Still Waiting" and "Joy in Repetition" (not released on CD).

There isn't 7 discs of material for an SOTT deluxe edition lol. Not unless you include "Dream Factory" and "Camille" as part of that. Even then there probably wouldn't be 7 discs unless there's live stuff in there as well. I guess there's rehearsal audio and the audio of the SOTT concert film included in that? |

How does that sound, compared to the '94 release?

Or if you don't have the vinyls and want to check if the sound is really better than on the CDs.
That's my case. I've been a fan since 1989 (so I'm definitely not a newbie), but I bought all the albums on CD. I have a lot of maxi-singles and related artists albums on vinyl, but not a single Prince album. [Edited 6/17/11 6:24am]

So, I downloaded "Prince" and "Graffiti Bridge" ("Homemade Deluxe Editions"). The intro to "Still Waiting" is indeed longer on the vinyl than on the CD version (melody repeated twice). The vinyl version of "Joy in Repetition" is the same as the CD version, though. I guess only the cassette version is different (slightly longer end).

Is the vinyl rip better than CD quality?

In my opinion, no. The original vinyl sounds better than the CD, but the CD sounds better than this particular vinyl rip. I've yet to hear a circulating vinyl rip that sounds better than the original CDs. Vinyl is better when:
The vinyl is pristine, no scratches, pops or hisses The turntable is high quality The amp & speakers are high quality
Digitizing the analog signal of the LPs will not create a "better" sound than CD. It may, however, create a "preferable" sound than the CD, particularly for albums that were not properly mastered for CD... Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

It doesn't cost anything to download these homemade editions, so each person can decide his or her own preference. I downloaded the SOTT vinyl rip and several others and put them on my ipod, but I decided that I liked the CD versions better. Mint condition vinyl on my system beats any of the digital versions, so it's just a question of what I want to listen to when I'm out of the house or exercising. I prefer to listen to the original CDs and I think some of the criticism of them is overblown. They sound a lot better than some of the loud remasters from the late 1990s and early 2000s. A good digital remaster using little or no compression could sound better, but I'm not holding my breath for that. I agree that the CDs are not as bad as people claim. They are in need of a remaster which could make them much better, BUT, as you pointed out, it's just as likely a remaster would be too loud and too compressed (to compete with current craptacular standards) and therefor NOT sound better than the original CD releases.
