In the last 6 years, he's only done the O2 and Hop Farm here in the UK.
The O2 aftershows were some of the best shows I've seen. The main shows were good but not as good as some of the past ones you mention. Hop Farm blew away anything he did at the O2 main shows. For me at least. In terms of vocals and playing I think he's better now than he's ever been. I preferred the Gold and ONA tours in terms of set lists played but that's another discussion.
All his musicians are garbage now? John Blackwell? Renato Netto? Maceo Parker? He's played recently with Sonny T, Michael B and Sheila's been popping up here and there. You may not like their personality but they are hardly garbage musicians!
To each their own though. That's always the beauty of Prince, one person's favourite track is hated by the next fan! RIP

Yeah, I don't know about that. My feelings about Prince is sorta like this:
It's a love-hate thing. Which is a big credit to the guy. Despite of who he is, his music is so great, that I still love it.

^ THIS guy is the most Overrated artist,
Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad
>>> 3 amazing albums, and then some great singles from Dangerous and HIStory.
3 brilliant albums does not make him KOP imo....

Hello, Michael here lol - in my opinion, seeing as Prince was also Mozart in a past (simultaneous) life - then I'd say yes - he is the greatest of all 'time'.

13 #1 singles in the US, #3 Best selling music artist of all time, Thriller; best-selling album of all time.....and the list goes on and on...all this with only 10 studio albums that's an accomplishment I'd say!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Um - he's not overrated. Don't even pull that stunt. In YOUR opinion there were three great albums, but Dangerous and HIStory were great albums.
And, once again, the honorific title of KOP is not just based on music, but sales, live performances, videos, etc, yadda, yadda, yadda. There's a reason Michael is called the King Of Pop and Prince isn't.

George Clinton and James Brown were only as good as the musicians they chose. James Brown did not write music, he grunted and danced. Bootsy said James would come intot he room, get himself worked up and at some point start counting a song off. The problem was there was no song and no warning when he would do it. If you wanted to get paid, you started playing when he started counting. Bootsy and Catfish knew what keys he likes to grunt in, so when he counted they would start playing stuff in those keys. Do a little research and see just how many JB classics Bootsy and Catfish wrote for James to grunt over. I'm not taking anything from James. If music were film, he could be called one of the greatest DIRECTORS of all time, but you wouldn't call George Lucas and actor, (hell, most of the time you can't even call his ACTORS actors). James had the big vision, but he didn't write or perform outside of grunting and dancing, one of which is totally unnecessary to make a record. Grunting is always good.
George Clinton is very similar. He had a CONcept and the guys in the band would play little sections of music and George would pick and choose the ones he liked and arrange the segments in an order that suited him. Again, DIRECTOR.
Calling these guys the greatest anything other than organizer and inpiration is a misnomer, I think.
Prince and Stevie Wonder, (and a few others) can be called almost without exception director, screenwriter, actor, etc...

Prince is probably my favourite artist but hes not the greatest... I think Dylan would have to take that title

First of all, to stay on topic for a moment. I either admire or feel bad for the original poster. If as he implies, he has indeed heard all of the music of "all-time," then I am envious. I'm over 40 and still and contantly discovering incredible music from the past. It pains me that life is simply too short to discover all of the great music out there, but I can keep trying and discovering.
If he HASN'T heard all of the music ever recorded, then I feel bad for him that his mind is closed to even considering acts and composers that have come and gone or among us now that may challenge his position on Prince. If you discover something you like even more, isn't that a good thing?
Re: MJ. Smooth is correct, MJ is not overrated.
By my estimation he is rated fairly accurately by most of the general public, and that as is the "greatest song-and-dance man" of the 20th Century. That said, at the end of the day, that's all he was; a "song-and-dance man." He wasn't an exceptional composer, lyricist or even musician, but had a nice singing voice, a good sense of rhythm and developed a distictive vocal-style. Like Elvis, his legacy will be only partly musical, with equal (or more) parts tragedy, oddity and cultural icon thrown in.
This is the general concensus on Jackson, and in my experience it's only fanatics that "overrate" him.
Don't even start with the "King of Pop" rubbish. It is not only a completely meaningless title, but it is widely accepted to be a self-proclaimed title at that. The fact that he made-up this title for himself just makes Jackson come off a little like Brian Fellow. [Edited 7/7/11 13:32pm] "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. oh its not a stunt! he is soooo completely overrated it makes me want to puke!! its not an opinion its a FACT! get over it! he will never b half as smart as prince is, no wonder prince never wanted to do anything with him! he got so much help starting his career, and prince had 0 help! so ya i would have to say u would have to b very smart and talented to become as famous and successful as prince is BY YOURSELF! plus he doesnt molest children Don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine

Here's the thing...regardless to what you and even he may want to think. Prince DID NOT become as famous and successful as he is...ALL BY HIMSELF! That's not my opinion...it's indisputable FACT and no amount of revisionist history will EVER change that!
Believe it! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Best artist is 100% subjective. So are the people wrong who think Bruce Springsteen is the best? No they are just as right as we are feeling Prince is the best. Even the dumbf*&ks who think Justin Beiber is the best aren't wrong....even though they still have low IQ or are just young and immature.
But yes Prince was/is a bad MFer.

Although you can argue that most other artists are as skilled, enough not more than Prince. Talented too, as well as Prince. But yet Prince has this eerie x-factor that no-one else possess. Maybe in the same way that Mozart did and to describe it would be impossible.
What Prince possesses as well as his many other talents is a way to connect with the audience, men and women, like no other artist. He is about incorporating something for both sexes equally. He is not just a man showing off his skills and talents - which he could easily do.
Prince is obsessed with how we listen and what pushes our buttons. He is very clever and no other artist comes anywhere near him in this catergory. I think that is why he remains so universally popular. Shut up already, damn.
