is prince too much of a show off ?

i just started a thread on the music banter website about prince and his all round ability ...the music banter website tends to have more of an indie/heavy rock vibe going on so i thought it would be interesting to get a viewpoint on his all round ability..

.

the general consenus seems to be that while they see that prince has got talent...he is too much of a showoff for them and tends to wank his guitar when playing..?... eek ...and they just see him in general as a bit of a dick...wonder how they get that impression .. lol ..

.

this 'show off' thing...hmmm...no ..i would rather watch prince put on a show any day of the week rather than watch someone just standing there strumming a guitar...he is a showman...i cant see whats wrong with that...?

.

any views on this ?...

.

"I'm too funky I can't sleep with myself."

"Can I play this guitar?"

"Do you know how many hits I've got? We'll be here 'til this time next year."

"Too many hits, we'll be here all night."

"Can't nobody do what Prince do."

Yeah maybe the continued cultivation of his image has been to the detriment of writing a decent tune.

HA! Once upon a time ago...HELL YES!

Now-a-days, he's more like the creepy dude in the park, wearing a trench coat, when it's 85 degrees outside. You just know he's gonna hit you Big Willy Style but when he snatches his coat open, you find out by peeking between the fingers of your hands that you instinctively hid behind, that he's got his pant legs rolled up and all he's got to Flash you with is the Everlasting Now. eek

Show Off? Yes indeed

Too Much? No

I cant help smiling when he's in a complete moment of endulgement of himself by himself. Sometimes its funny, sometimes its a pretty awesome & other times its just a *smh* "oh goodness prince." moment.

wth do u want him to do? If he's putting on a good show he's a show off? Sometimes I feel like people HAVE TO find a reason to criticize him...

Though I agree with your sentiment, I also realize that most of them are being hypocritical because they also display showmanship when they act like they are not trying to be traditional showmen. So, yes, I'd rather see a showman or showmanship when I pay my money for a live "show" rather than somebody just standing there doing nothing but sounding exactly like the record. But, again, I also know that the act of just standing there, for most of these so-called indie folks, is just as much of an "act" or "show" as what Prince is doing. They are, ultimately, like the guy who is too cool for the room who hopes that everyone else in the room notices how he doesn't care about them.
