Prince Writing Songs For Others???? I remember when Prince use to produce for his artist, & A couple others back in the day. But how come he doesn't produce for today's artist? He can still write some pop tunes [when he wants to]. I remember he did "Waiting Room" for No Doubt, but I haven't heard much about him producing for other artist at all recently [I guess Bria & Tamar count, but I'm talking about artist he didn't put out himself. I'm referring to any of today's pop artist].....
[I know he wouldn't] But if he put some songs in the hands of today's producer's, I'd like to hear the outcome....
.....Your Thoughts?
Please keep in mind that I'm talking about love songs. I'm not talking about religious Prince tracks whatsoever. If he can still write a sappy love song, he can still write for others. I actually feel [some] of his recent songs would have been better received sung by others.....

Because Prince is not a hitmaker. Record companies are not going to pay him to produce their acts. They're going to use whoever the beatmaker of the month is, who has the sound the young people like. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton |

I think he hasn't done it simply because he doesn't want to, not because of a lack of offers/requests.
As many different people try to emulate his sound these days, I think that if he did offer to producer or write for someone, a ton of them would jump at the chance. And a LOT of musicians/singers have namechecked Prince as being one of their favorites, whether they mean it or not, because they know he has credibility and respect in the field too. So some would flock to him because they're genuinely fans and want his input on their work, and some would flock after him because of the prestige of his name in the field and they think that would make them look more artistically legitimate. I hear his name dropped by so many of today's artist. The Dream has been ripping off Prince's sound far a while....with quite a few others. So you may be right about him just not wanting to do it. Or it could be that record labels want nothing to do with him either..... |

That was during an era of creativity and a period where Prince truly COULD do no wrong, especially during the '80s. After the '90s, it was more for himself than others because, I guess, having struggled with Paisley Park and people failing to really buy into everything he did with acts like George Clinton and Mavis Staples and even Jill Jones and Sheila E probably spooked him, so he focused on himself and anything he produced for others was only promoted independently after that. No one was convinced Bria Valente had a future when he put her album out on his albums lol Tamar never got a chance to come out with hers. |
