Am I the only one who right now prefers his 00's stuff?

I've been listening to albums like Musicology, 3121, Lotus or 20Ten almost non-stop since XMas, even parts of TRC...

I haven't touched albums like DM, 1999, Parade, SOTT or D&P since 2010's summer...

what about you? are you "tired" of his old stuff? Do you think that his 04-10 sutff was (is) bloody good?

The old stuff is better but some of the new stuff is pretty good as well.

This will turn ugly as soon as someone presents scientific proof that X is better than Y. And someone will make a graph and a pie chart. Somebody will link to a dictionary when the word subjectivity comes up. And the party will be truly spoilt when somebody who's clearly had too much red wine invents the term "True Fan", and a great deal of the party bystanders will whisper to each other: "Let's not ever go to these sorts of parties again" and "Nobody tasted my quiche". And by the time Bart arrives to point to the stain on the floor you'd wish it had just been you and the wife at home alone in front of the telly.

That said, no, I'm not tired of his 80s stuff. But I do actually prefer his 00s to most of his 90s stuff.

The thing about Prince is that I dont think he has a certain thing to satisfy just one group of people. From the looks of it looks like the stuff people like vary drastically from person to person.

For example, I actually prefer his 90's stuff to most of his 80's and 00's stuff.

Oh and on topic, yeah I've been listening to his newer stuff a lot recently. Mainly Never B Another Like Me, great song.

Do u prefer his 00's ingeneral or are just listening to his 00's stuff more because you've heard the 80's a million times?

Right now i'm listening to Lovesexy and his 90's stuff more then Parade,Sott etc, because i've heard those albums billions of time, but i would say in general they are better then Lovesexxy,Symbol Album,Come and 20ten which I'm currently playing more of right now.

If that makes any sense to u

Well, that's a good lot.

From his 2000 onwards stuff the only album that I revisit often is 'The Rainbow Children' and sometimes Xpectation (I can also play NEWS once a year).

I listened to Musicology for 2 months, 3121 for 2 weeks, Planet Earth twice and one quick run through Lotus/MPLSound and 20Ten was enough to abhor them.

I didn't even bother mentioning 'how much' I do listen to his live (with make-up) albums or turds like One Half An Hour Bored With Prince On Piano Playing Dirges And Lullabies.

I wish I could like from his 2000s output half the amount of stuff you like from the 90s. Seems that lowering one's musical standards pays back some kind of reward...

I listen to albums randomly from any period. Every album has clunkers and then gems. I definitely felt that way about his albums in the 80's too.

It hurts my ears to listen to uninspired music. No, thank you!

If I listen to Prince, I choose the 80s stuff. If not, there's lots of music of other artists.

I hear what your'e saying! I'm not going to start on the whole 'what era was better' jibber jabber, but I've heard the classics so many times...

I think I'm going to give them a break for a while.

Going to Hop Farm tomorrow, I know I'll be happy to hear the classics once I'm there, but really hoping for more recent tracks too.

Generally I try to treat the whole catalog as one massive album and listen to it all from beginning to end. Of course when a new album is released I give that multiple spins to familiarise myself with it.

Sometimes I break things up into chunks and listen to them several times in a row. Recently it was The Black Album- prince. That might be my least favourite era but I try to revisit it and see if anything new clicks.

To answer the original question I probably prefer the 04-10 era over 88-92 and definitely over 97-03. MPLSoUND I found to be pretty weak but otherwise I have quite enjoyed his recent music.

I feel sorry for you who think that Prince's "80s stuff" is his released albums and singles. There are many many unreleased songs, rehearsals, and live shows circulating from this period. I rarely listen to the released albums as it's jsut a very very small portion of his output from that time. A very small part of the story.

I've always thought all the bitching about his new stuff doesn't make sense because he actually has put out a lot of good stuff in recent years. There's songs on Musicology and 3121 that I still play sometimes so....

Yes. Even though I like the old stuff better, for some reason I always listen to the newer stuff. Just because it's "there", and I appreciate that it's there, I guess.

I bet the newer/younger fans tend to gravitate towards his more recent stuff more on the whole, because it's closer to what's going on now musically in general, it's closer to what they know. A lot of the 80s stuff probably sounds weird to them. Plus 80s Prince probably weirds them out in GENERAL, he was very out-there and adventurous, they can't handle him lol .

I'm an 80s baby and my fundmental years was me growing up around 80s musc and I'm odd as fuck myself, so it's a perfect fit. Eighties Prince is closest to how my own mind works and where my own head and heart is at.

If I really had to rank eras musically in terms of which ones I like best it'd be :

1.) 1980s

2.)1990s

3)2000s

As much as I do like a lot of the newer stuff, the eighties stuff will always be IT for me. Second comes the 90s - stuff like the song "Interactive"; or discs like "The Gold Experience" biggrin ....

Now, that is an interesting idea. i might just try it.

And to the OP, i choose albums from all over the decades, just depending on what i want to hear. the stuff i play the least is 1990-1991, 1996, 2001-2003, 2007-2008. of his recent stuff, my favorites are musicology, 3121 & lotusflow3r (single disc). musicology actually gets as much play as any prince album in my apartment. my wife is a fan of that album. she likes most prince, just not as much as i do. with musicology, we listen to tracks 8-12 the most. love jones is on the tv again baby, i wanna go...

Never got tired of most of his Warners Bros era stuff 1978-1995.

I don't listen to anything post-'95 very often. [Except for concert bootlegs]

The1592

Well, since this has turned into '80s Prince vs. 2000s Prince', let me say that I think his music from 2001-2010 (since there was no album in 2000) is as good as his 80s music. Maybe the reason I feel this way is because I'm not stuck in the 80s (being only 18 years old) like the rest of you. Or, maybe I feel this way because I appreciate artistic growth more than naughty words and party music.

I feel like The Rainbow Children, 3121, and Lotusflow3r are on par with any 80s albums, and are all classics; and even the other albums have classics on them.

I don't really think you can compare Prince eras, because the 80s are really different than the 90s, lyrically and musically, and the 90s are really different than the 00s, so it's all a matter of preference. I'm not sick of any era, but I do appreciate his 2000s music, though I myself am really into Parade at the moment. But now that you mentioned it, I'm gonna go listen to some recent stuff...
