Prince Article In Vibe Magazine

Vibe magazine recently put together a really GREAT article detaling the history of the 2 icons' relationship. Check it out...

http://www.vibe.com/conte...al-history

“I heard you were looking for me,” said a deep voice on the other end of the phone. It was the fall of 1996, and Michael Jackson was holding court in a posh suite at the Four Seasons Hotel in New York. The King of Pop had instructed his handlers to contact his old peer and rival Prince for a planned collaboration. The prospect for such a headline-making union was indeed intriguing. For much of the ‘80s, Michael Joseph Jackson and Prince Rogers Nelson took turns ruling the musical landscape. MJ, the gifted Motown child prodigy who made good on his ambition to become the biggest pop star to ever walk the earth with the release of the record-breaking landmark Thriller. Prince, the at times outrageous, androgynous, one-man-band performer and producer who backed up his genius rep by pulling off one of the most unlikely coups in rock history after unleashing the multi-platinum 1984 Purple Rain soundtrack and Oscar winning film. A rivalry was born.

But more than a decade later, both had found themselves in a battle to save their respective careers. MJ struggled mightily to fight unproven child molestation accusations as the tabloid brigade hounded him relentlessly. Prince declared war against his longtime label Warner Bros. and changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol as he headed deeper into obscurity. Indeed, a team-up between the two icons would be perceived as a brilliant masterstroke. “I think it would be just great,” MJ told Prince. Yet, the collaboration to end all collaborations would never happen. Both aging legends would achieve comebacks on their own terms. With the untimely June 25, 2009 death of Jackson, their connection grows even more profound. The fact that the public is still enamored with MJ and Prince speaks volumes for their cultural impact and influential contributions to music. But what did these two titans really think of one another? Was there a true rivalry or deep respect? VIBE presents the Oral History of a King and a Prince.—Keith Murphy

Even if the story is detailing how much the 2 respected each other?

Unfortunately, I think the lock will come eventually. Which is too bad, because there's some interesting information in this article, especially Alan Leeds's account of the infamous James Brown/Prince/MJ concert.

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

Yeah. Cool little article. Thanks for the link.

Alan Leeds says regarding the infamous JB/MJ gig that the guitar Prince was given was left-handed - that's incorrect. The video is on youtube. It's a standard right-handed guitar. To me it looks like the strap is way too low for him, and that's why he kind of fumbles around on it. Not because it was left-handed. For me, Prince just looks a little intimidated and nervous, and that explains his 'odd' performance.

Maybe you should edit the thread title to read "Prince Article In Vibe Magazine." The thread might be more likely to survive without the explicit MJ mention in the title. I think it's legitimate Prince-related news and should get a mention in this forum.

An interesting, if old, article. I'm fine with it being up for a bit, but leaving it up will quickly illustrate what Prince/MJ threads become.

It's already started.

Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

Thanks, electricberet, I took your advice. It's too good of a written piece to throw away just because of a title.

Changing the thread title might keep the discussion positive. I think the reason for the sticky is that, as Mars pointed out, threads about MJ in this forum usually devolve into shouting matches fairly quickly.

Pretty sure it is from 2010.

I'm happy that you guys appreciated the article. I thought it was fantastic reading whether it's a year old or recently posted as the 6/25/11 date on VIBE's site indicates. The insight and positivity of it had to be shared with my fellow orgers.

Great article.

In it Questlove says he has video of all 4 LA Purple Rain concerts. I'm assuming they were filmed by a single camera on a tripod in the back. It definitely doesn't sound like it's audience made. Has anyone ever heard of the video of these shows hitting the market? Or is this another case of Questlove having access to shit MOST Prince collectors don't??

I don't think I will ever understand why a rivalry existed in the first place. They are different artists; different sounds and looks and stage performances and bands and musical philosophies. shrug
