Did I find a rare/valuable record?

Hey guys,

I don't normally collect vinyl, but was at a kickass store in my area and just decided to check through the Prince section. There wasn't much there, but there was what appears to be a promo record...

It's an all-white sleeve, no artwork, NPG Records, The New Power Generation

Side 1 has three mixes of the Good Life

Side 2 has a song I've never heard of called "Free the Music" and 2 remixes of Get Wild.

Did I stumble upon a good find? It was only 9 bucks so either way I don't care, especially as it has a song on it that I didn't previously own.

Sounds like this one: http://www.discogs.com/Ne...ase/332902

If it's a promo, then it is relatively rare. Value of course depends on the market.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Is 'Free The Music' available on CD?

I have this promo, found it cheap way back when, prob. about 98/99 and wanted it for the b-side (what a let down!), but I don't remember if it was available on any other format (CD).

Yeah that's the CD squirrelgrease...

As to the Free the Music track, had I known it was just another 2 Whom It May Concern, I would have given it a skip.

I believe after doing a little research it was released as a CD Maxi Single as well.

"Free the Music" is nothing really great. It's basically a drum beat with Mayte saying "Free the Music" and "Exodus" and snippets of songs from the Exodus album overdubbed on top. There's some guitar and horns peppered here and there, but it's really more of a commercial for the Exodus album in the same way that "2 Whom It May Concern" was a commercial for the Love Symbol album.

Yes. It's on "The Good Life" Maxi-Single, which was released on CD. I found it at (of all places) Circuit City back in the day. That's also where I snagged the Exodus album and Mayte's Children of the Sun (both sold as imports). Even though I was in college and broke as hell a the time, I'm glad I snatched them up because I've never seen them anywhere else ever since.

Unfortunately it's not rare. In fact, it's not even complete. The 12" promo of the good life came with a picture sleeve:

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

hmmm I have that too, maybe I'm just getting forgetful in my old age.

Ahhh looking at discogs.com entry - the US maxi has it, the UK doesn't.
