Why Was "Darling Nikki" Edited in Purple Rain

Any ideas why that verse was cut in the film? Also it was a terrible edit audio-wise...

So I'm clear, I'm asking about why "Darling Nikki" was edited for Purple Rain the movie...

I've wondered that too. The only reason I can think of is that the verse that was cut doesn't serve the purpose of the song in that scene. The song is supposed to be a direct insult at Apollonia. The cut verse doesn't relate to her, so maybe the thought was that it would confuse the issue if it were left in.

TBQH I never got that scene. That was one of the most jarring moments of the film... I think it started to go downhill from that point until it got to "Purple Rain".

When I saw the movie in the theater (in Iowa), people were audibly disgusted by Wendy's simulated blowjob during Computer Blue and then the whole Darling Nikki performance. But I think it's a great scene. boxed

lol I just didn't get why that part was even in the movie, it didn't really make good enough sense and what was the point of it? It just looked stupid. lol

I think it makes sense. He's trying to hurt Apples as much as he can, so he pulls out all the stops and goes for the jugular. Also, it shows how he lets his personal life control his professional one: He'll piss off everyone around him, turn off the entire crowd, and alienate the people who care about him most just to prove a point and get revenge. That scene is amazingly prophetic.

^ LOVE Computer Blue scene. I am always amazed how the almost lyric-less song keeps my attention, besides it being performed and played by Prince. Its just amazing how the guitar speaks to you

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

I sometimes think Computer Blue might be his best song ever. It just blows me away, especially the hallway speech version.

I thought it also had to do with Prince letting Morris know that he had already tagged that booty first

what do you mean downhill? Computer Blue/Darlin Nikki scenes were the hottest 4 me

Did you follow the movie at all? the Kid is insecure and jealous, accusing Apollonia of cheating by working with Morris, he's angry and confused ie Computer Blue jealous and bitter Darlin Nikki

That was a total rock star momemt

According to the script. Wendy & Prince were supposed to have a similar look and it was to look almost like Prince was going down on himself

I listen to every live and studio version, I just loose it with that song, it's like the next step of anger and confusion from Something In the Water Does Not Compute

And I love the sexy movements of BrownMark Prince & Wendy at the opening

It is a big part of the song too. Like 1/3 of it. I am guessing it was just cut for flow.

But then again some of the film was lost. Some parts used work prints. If part of a segment that long was lost, they would not be able to use a work print... It could be some of the that song was among the film that was lost?

Great scene, these two songs. He tried to recapture it in GB with 'Tick Tick Bang' but, well, yeah.

I thought they just tightened it up by removing that verse. I'm sure it was all there in the initial cut, but you have to kill your darlings. It only takes a few minutes to build that Kid/Apollonia energy, and too much could turn into the Gong Show. There's a story to tell, after all. smile

Yeah I think it was timing, it made sense to not 'draw it out' it moved well with the scene of A6 & the Time sitting and taking in what he is saying to her immediately getting emotional and running out.

Even hearing the studio longer version I can understand why that part was cut

Another question could be why was the extended version of Let's Go Crazy used? I've always been glad that it was, because I like that little jump dance that the Revolution does during it. But it's interesting that it's in there.

It was a great introduction to the 1st Avenue nite life, 2 Morris Day & Jerome, 2 Apollonia new in town, 2 the Kid & the Revolution. And it told a mini story of the characters without drawing out the movie

Of course, I seem to recall that in an earlier version of the script, when Vanity was still set to play that character, their real name was "Nikki" and not Apollonia... so it was a more direct insult.

The funny thing about that scene to me is that I never actually got the point that it was trying to make. I just thought they were being cool by rocking out together and it was just... you know, part of the show. I never actually understood that that is what it was supposed to be - a simulated blow job. It's weird, in retrospect, because she isn't even looking at him. She seems so focused on the guitar.

"Masturbating with a magazine" always left me unsure...did he mean 'over the pictures in a magazine' or rolled up like a great big paper dildo?

The director's going to have to take the credit and blame for how the movie came out. Maybe the commentary track mentions it during that scene, but I haven't listened to it since the 2 DVD set came out.

I took it as The Kid humiliating Apollonia on stage.

But there's a whole other debate on a Purple Rain deluxe edition that should've come out in 2004 with the full length songs and other things he wasn't able to do back in '84 because he was stuck with the vinyl limitation.

I guess Rihanna didn't get the word that Prince doesn't want anyone covering his songs?

I wish the Hallway speech version was kept as opposed to make room with "Take Me With U".

And doesn't make no sense AT ALL to cut the song right after the "Father's Song" section, thats when the song gets jumping.
