Much of Purple Rain has a truncated feel to it, minus When Doves Cry.

I was blown away by the Lets Go Crazy version on the maxi and the movie.

I was equally awed by parts of the extended version(s) of Computer Blue.

I remember when parts of computer blue were played in the movie during the

'band rehearsals' and I didn't realize it was part of the song. I thought it was

a whole other song--I loved that part, and wondered why it wasn't in the album.

Then years later, I heard a Computer Blue extended boot, and recognized

the part in the song. The "Poor Poor lonely computer" bit is hokie, but

to me so is the "ooh wee sha sha ka ka yeah ee yeah" part in "Let's

Pretend We're Married" and I still dig that song.

Overall, I like the configuration of Purple Rain which was released.

TBQH I never got that scene. That was one of the most jarring moments of the film... I think it started to go downhill from that point until it got to "Purple Rain".

what do you mean downhill? Computer Blue/Darlin Nikki scenes were the hottest 4 me

Did you follow the movie at all? the Kid is insecure and jealous, accusing Apollonia of cheating by working with Morris, he's angry and confused ie Computer Blue jealous and bitter Darlin Nikki

nod

I don´t remember off the top of my head what lyrics you are referring to.What part of Darling Nikki was edited?

Maybe it had to do with the fact that Apollonia´s role was actually to be played by Vanity and Vanity´s name in Purple Rain was supposed to be Nikki, which is a bit awkward because the character´s name later became Apollonia while the name in the song remained Nikki. Would´ve sounded weird to rename it Darling Apollonia, but I´m getting off topic.

So.....what part of the lyrics was edited? I´m too lazy to put the movie in right now.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

^ LOVE Computer Blue scene. I am always amazed how the almost lyric-less song keeps my attention, besides it being performed and played by Prince. Its just amazing how the guitar speaks to you

I sometimes think Computer Blue might be his best song ever. It just blows me away, especially the hallway speech version.

nod

According to the script. Wendy & Prince were supposed to have a similar look and it was to look almost like Prince was going down on himself

The funny thing about that scene to me is that I never actually got the point that it was trying to make. I just thought they were being cool by rocking out together and it was just... you know, part of the show. I never actually understood that that is what it was supposed to be - a simulated blow job. It's weird, in retrospect, because she isn't even looking at him. She seems so focused on the guitar.

You all know that was all ripped of David Bowie's 70's shows where he would do the same thing with his guitarist?

Even back then I understood a rockers guitar to be a phallic symbol

It's why Jill Jones & Kim looked so disgusted

"Masturbating with a magazine" always left me unsure...did he mean 'over the pictures in a magazine' or rolled up like a great big paper dildo?

I never pictured the use of the mag as a dildo

Simply it's looking at a photo and masturbating 2 it

Same here, the energy of that album is why it was so great. People try to downplay it and say more recent albums were better but, it's just silly. The purple energy of that time was just crazy

When Prince debut of Computer Blue was performed at 1st Avenue 1983 I think it was the only song he introduced "This song is called Computer Blue" and with all the various studio cuts of this I know this song was hot 4 Prince or should I say Prince was hot 4 this song

Yes, yes, YES!!! I think most of those that say that either weren't fans at that time or prior to and therefore weren't really around to feel the electricity of the summer and fall of 1984. It was PURPLE ELECTRICITY everywhere, man! Truly a feeling to behold, and it never really

ended for me...at least until years later.

The album was only 9 songs, but what a nine-song set it was, especially when you include the B-sides to the singles AND the associated artists releasing stuff.

I agree! 1984 was a heavy year for Prince AND the acts surrounding him (Time, Apollonia 6, etc). Truly a moment in time that would never be captured again. If only I was at least 11 when that film came out though lol

I agree. There is no denying the power of that era, it even scared Prince lol.

I too felt that electricity into the ATWIAD & Parade eras. He was just starting to touch on a real music revolution.

I remember the crispness of hearing the album through my walk-man totally wonderful
