Rock In Rio video question

Princevault says "Rock in Rio II was aired live to 55 countries", and I know that we have a soundboard and video of at least one of the 2 concerts. So my question is: was one (or both) of the show(s) broadcast on TV in Brazil or anywhere else and if so was it complete or edited and is it the circulating video/CD, or do we just have bootlegs?

Thanks biggrin

I have no idea if both shows were broadcast in Brazil, was the second concert not staged in Argentina?

Anyway, there are two versions of Rock In Rio circulating, one edited and one not, the unedited version is the full set, and is also a very good upgrade in picture quality from the first version, though it still has it's problems, on the whole though, it is a much better viewing experience.

This from The Vault book...

MTV filmed the entire event (the festival) and aired a 3 hr special. However, Prince bought back the television rights to his performances, thus preventing MTV from airing his portions of the show. He was reticent because he breaking in new bandmembers and played so much new material.

Yes, 1st show at Rock In Rio on 18th Jan '91, then a show on the 21st in Argentina, then his second Rock In Rio show on the 24th.

No mention of what was broadcast on South American TV though.

Read: He knew his new music was shit (all of the heavy rap or Tony M stuff) and this "new" band sucked and was scared of how the public would react.

I had a friend visiting and employee at MTV headquarters over 10 years ago, and I asked if they could locate these tapes (so I could get the best copy!), they said those parts of the concerts (the Prince parts) were gone.

OK, so no official broadcast, thanks biggrin

As for the quality of the music, I happen to love it, there was a very interesting post-Nude/pre-D&P moment when Prince was trying all this new material (also see the rehearsal with Levi & Rosie singing) biggrin

I think the performance is incredible! I know a lot of people hate it, and reportedly Prince was being heckled by the crowd who was there to see Guns n Roses...

But the Let's Go Crazy (breaking all his guitar strings)/Horny Pony and then a very hard hitting version of Kiss was great.

Well, I don't know. On the unedited version of this show, it begins with a Brazilian guy in a tv studio talking about Prince, it shows old photos of him in the background etc, so it looks like a TV broadcast. After the presenter chats, he obviously introduces the gig, which is then played in full with no ad breaks. Now this was obviously created for a TV broadcast of some sort, but I can find no info on when or where it may have been shown.

Yet The Vault book states that Prince bought the rights from MTV of the footage, so I have no idea where this unedited footage came from, a TV broadcast that never was?

It was broadcast live at the time on the South American MTV channel? The announcer comes in over the performance at times.

That would make sense, but apparently Prince bought the rights to his performances from MTV so that they would not be shown (see reply #2), I would assume that this would cover any MTV broadcast in any country.

Mmmmh, that's really fascinating... IIUC the MTV broadcast was only a few songs/artist, and what u say seem to suggest that there's no MTV logo on the screen (unthinkable for an MTV footage, wherever in the world), so could it be that a non-MTV local channel broadcast the entire show live, much like that Spanish TV Channel broadcasting La Coruna a year earlier?

I'd be quite amazed if the Vault/Uptown team had missed this but still, I can't see what this Brazilian dude in a TV studio would be doin' here if it was 100% bootleg.

We really need to sort it out O_O

Just found this info on http://www.princevault.co...y,_1991-am

Albeit the entire concert was filmed by MTV for broadcasting purposes, Prince, having bought back the television rights, didn't allow its broadcast on US TV. Nevertheless the concert was aired by I-Sat, a Brazilian satellite channel.

So it looks like it was broadcast in South America, just not by MTV, this is not mentioned in The Vault book.

I have the SOTT DVD here. Yes, I still dont know why nobody did it with Rock in Rio. Maybe because Prince is not popular here. But who knows? smile

Stevie Wonder´s 85 Tokyo concert was just released here. So, anything is possible smile

I have one of the concerts. It´s a full concert. My only complaint is that Prince´s guitar volume is too low. Sometimes it´s hard to hear it. I dont know how it was there (I wasnt a Prince fan back then, shame on me sad )

Mmmh, look what I found on a website I can't name or link here: "The entire show was filmed, however only 45 minutes were ever broadcast"

However, the poster adds that "The picture quality of the unedited footage is much poorer than the broadcasted version", so I guess getting this particular version should allow us to know which parts were broadcast and which weren't.

It get easier and easier to sort out rolleyes

Mmm, the unedited version that I downloaded is (by the statements of several posters) a big improvement in picture quality over the edited version.

I can't comment on that as I only have the unedited version.

IDK, I used 2 have a soundboard CD version of the full show with a great quality for each song (it disappeared, I dunno how I managed to lose it sad ) but I've never seen the video. I'll try to get both thje video and the audio asap (uneasy with my slow connection). In the meantime, anyone who can help me sort it out by telling me which songs are on the broadcast version and the length of each song would be my personal hero biggrin

<<<<<Posters note>>>>>

There are other versions of this show with very poor quality of audio & video.
Until today I haven't seen a better quality DVD than this. I've ripped from my VHS master that I recorded in 1991 (see lineage).
The quality isn't perfect, but it is by far a very important upgrade to others versions.

Hello again folks biggrin

I just got that boot named "May you live 2 see the dawn" but i seem 2 remember that my long-lost bootleg of this show had another title and cover and a MUCH BETTER sound quality. Am I trippin' or does this exist and if so, under which name (not asking where to get it, just the boot's name ^^)

Thanks again wink

I remember getting the boot cd around December 92, enjoyed it although it was heavily edited, never realised there was video footage as well, which i admit is abit ignorant of me, mmm, looks like a new hunt will begin wink

If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.
