I rarely post on the org, but I need help from some purple people today.

I have a "friend" who does not like Prince (based on the songs that have been released on the radio). I was having a conversation with him and some other friends who do like Prince and telling him how influential Prince has been as still is, but he just isn't hearing that. So he asked if I would send him a Prince song that I think he would like. The point of reference that I have of his taste in music is that he says his favorite band is Queen. So I'm asking my purple friends here to suggest a few songs that he may like. Keep in mind that he hates songs like "Purple Rain" and "Raspberry Beret". Let the posts begin.

Off the top of my head, Purple Rain seems the most appropriate (it's rock and very theatrical), but your friend doesn't like it. Other songs by Prince that I think fall into the rock category:

Delirious

Future Soul Song might be another choice if you have it. I love the Sha la la part; seems like it might be something Queen might have done.

The first thing I was gonna say was give them the most accessible stuff, the hits. But since you say they don't like Purple Rain...

Try "Parade". Still kinda accessible, but just artsy-fartsy enough that they might like it.

But I think you said you want to play them only one song? I guess "Horny Toad" or "Can't Stop This Feeling I Got", or "Delirious" is in the general vein of "This Thing Called Love".

The closest Prince song I can think of to something along the lines of "Bohemian Rhapsody" is "Condition of the Heart". You could try that.

If they like "Another One Bites the Dust", I'd play them "I Wanna Be Your Lover" .

Oh, fuck it - I don't know. Just keep throwing random songs at them and see what they respond to .

He likes Queen but not Purple Rain? Something in the water does not compute.

You'll probably have a tough time converting this guys cuz it sounds like he's got a pretty hard bias against Prince. Seriously, anyone who likes "We Will Rock You" should love "1999."

Anyway, Prince's most Queen-like song is probably "3 Chains of Gold." A lot of people hate that song, but it's a pretty cool exercise in glam and should prove to your firend that Prince is more than just a funk and r&b guy.

If we're just going for some melodic rock that your average radio listener wouldn't know, how about these...

those are both good for beginners, to start with.

Agreed - plus if its just a track he wants either Pop Life, Money Don't Matter 2 night or Rock and Roll Is Alive (and lives in MPLS)

when i first heard 3 chains of gold, i sent it to my friend that doesnt really listen to prince. after one listen he said it was the best prince song hes ever heard. i dont get what everyone's problem with this song, i think its amazing

this is actually a pretty good idea

I'd say, surprise them.

Don't go for Three Chains 'o' Gold. I mean, it's a great song and all, but it's like taking your Chinese friends to a Chinese restaurant (unless you live in China...).

Go for Zannalee, Peach or The Ride. They'll probably dig the guitar solos. Or in case they are more into ballads: Sometimes It Snows In April or Old Friends 4 Sale.

What works every-single-time I want to amaze someone with Prince's talent, although they are not his own songs:

- Purple House (Rave DVD)

- Just my imagination (Small Club bootleg)

- While my guitar gently weeps (Roll n Roll Hall of Fame - Just youtube on 'greatest guitar solo ever')

I don't know anyone who doesn't at least dig one Prince song/performance
