It has simply got to be the worst song he's ever written. I don't even have the energy to take it apart, but I have before on this message board. Holy christ that song is like an ear abortion. The performances are fine because Prince doesn't let weak performances slip out too often. It's the actual SONG that sucks 12 dog dicks. NO ONE could sing that song and make it mean a damned thing. He had to have a ballad for the album and Sheena was quasi-famous so it made it on. I'm sure the studio was asking for something commercial, too. It made the top 40 because it was riding the coat-tails of the Batman movie, NOT because it was a good song. |

Yeah saccharine.... Sounds like music from Celine Dion.
The song is not all bad, it's "OK" imo. Prince 4Ever. |

Love this song! Recently in an interview he said that he didn't actually write it! Blimey Prince what else did u not 'write'??
I love the fact that Prince can be cheesy at times! Arms of Orion is a great song either way and think it's a very beautiful way to express emotion. Shut up already, damn. |

Yep! I think so many people have described it as cheesy that he's probably back tracked and said he didn't write it. [Edited 6/21/11 4:30am]Shut up already, damn. |

He wanted to create a cheesy, pompous, sticky and schmaltzy Hollywood ballad. Unfortunately, he succeeded
I guess that, back in the day, veteran fans were worried. I mean, in 1989, it WAS the cheesiest and most ludicrous song he had ever done (excluding his late-70's ballads). A symptom of worse things to come?? |

The song would've been a HUGE hit had it been released in 81-82. These cheesy ballads(duets) were ALL the rage back in those two years.

Name one worse, then. Donm't get me wrong - he's written some that are so bad it almost makes to split hairs, but I think Arms of Orion even beats Jughead a little. Im not talking about the music, folks. I'm talking about the lyrics. A song in 50/50 music/lyrics. This song fails on so many levels it buggers the mind. |

I like this song yeah,it's syrupy and schmaltzy but I love alot of those 70s ballads. This song reminds me of those. It sounds like something that would have been sung by Olivia Newton John (and a duet partner) in the 70s. |

I wish that the director of 'Batman' should had used this song in the film. It's a shame the way they used Prince's music, most songs can barely be heard! "Trust" and "Partyman" are the only songs that are given full exposure. |

Tim Burton wasn't that thrilled with the soundtrack, thats probably why his music weren't highlighted that much. |

From the first time I heard it, I liked it and never really understood why it gets hate on the org by some folks, but now that you mention it... I agree with you - it doesn't sound like a Prince song. It's kind of bland for him.

Do Me Baby,International Lover, Purple Rain,The Condition of the Heart,Sometimes it Snows in April,Slow Love,Adore and finally The Arms of Orion. Which is "odd man out"? I think that this song clearly has no emotion.
[Edited 6/20/11 21:36pm]
Yeah but, which one of those songs would have fit in that movie? It had to be a duet, Bruce Wayne and Vickie Vale. If ever a song had to be "sacrificed" for a project....glad it was that one. |

Nr Goodnight. But I'd place Orion amongst the top third of his discography, so any song I name is negligible. |

How's it possibly cheesy? It's incredible! I've been blessed with a recent high of this song as well. Also flipping over the 45 for the B-side too (Love U In Me). Great great song that I love
I would not say that it is incredible, but I really like it, always have.
And I like "I Love U In Me" even more.
