Prince - The Hits 3? I'm sure this has been done, but I'm relatively new to the forum. So here we go...
It seems like the only existing "Best of" Prince compilations out there cover his career up to 1992/1993 (ending with either "Diamonds and Pearls" or "The Love Symbol" album). Yes, I know this is a Warner Brothers issue.
If you were to create a follow-up to "The Hits" 1, 2 and B-Sides (let's call it "The Hits 3") that covered 1994 - 2010 ("Come" through "20ten"), what tracks would you put on it?
Yes, I know that most of his greatest tracks from this period couldn't really be called "Hits" (except for maybe "Most Beautiful Girl" and "Musicology"), but you get the idea. I'll even welcome rarities like "F.U.N.K.," if you love it. This is your chance to craft the perfect "Best-of" CD covering the last 15-16 years of Prince's career.
No more than 15 - 18 tracks please. Make it a solid comp!

Black Sweat Fury Guitar Chelsea Rogers Musicology Dreamer The Most Beautiful Girl In The World F.U.N.K. Dinner With Delores Cinnamon Girl I Like Funky Music BatDance Electric Chair There'll Never Be Another Like Me Planet Earth Baby Knows
You are right though - don't think you can call it 'hits'.

Great list. Altough Batdance and Electric Chair are from the earlier Warner period. Good to see Dinner with Delores on here.

1. The Most beautiful girl in the world 2. Gold 3. Eye Hate You 4. Somebody's Somebody 5. Betcha By Golly Wow 6. The Holy River 7. The One 8. The Greatest Romance Ever Sold 9. Musicology 10. Black Sweat 11. Fury 12. Sticky Like Glue 13. Endorphinmachine 14. Call My Name 15. Dreamer
These are not necessarily the 15 best songs he has done over the past 18 years but the most popular ones. Alot of non fans loved Fury, for example. And Black Sweat was a hit in many countries. And so on

Too hard. Can't do it.
I'd be up to 15-18 tracks between Come, The Gold Experience, Chaos & Disorder and Emancipation alone. When you add New Power Soul, Crystal Ball, The Truth, Rave, TRC, Rave, Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth, Lotusflow3r, MPLSoUND, 20TEN, Chocolate Invasion, Slaughterhouse....
That's 22 discs of material alone right there.
And we haven't even considered ONA Piano... NEWS... C-NOTE....Xpectation....
It's hard enough, but when the limit works out to not even being able to pick even ONE song from every album, it's just impossible.
It'd have to be a 3-disc compilation like the original "Hits/B-Sides" with at least 18 tracks on each disc to make it even somewhat feasible for me. |

LOL. I get it. But remember, the point of a compilation CD is to distill the artist's output for collectors and more casual fans. I can't imagine casual fans would want to buy a 2 or 3-disc collection of Prince's post-1993 work. This is your opportunity to sell Prince's "darker period" to lost or casual fans with a solid sample of his best stuff. THEN, they can go back and explore the rest of the catalog on their own.

I left out some fan favorites and minor hits, but I think this is a pretty solid collection:
Includes rock, funk and r&b, and in my opinion is every bit as strong as, say, The Very Best Of Prince. Hopefully that fits on one CD; and if NPG music counts, then throw in "Come On".
Other songs I wanted to include: Endorphinmachine, Dolphin, Shy, Jam Of The Year, The Work Pt. 1, 1+1+1 Is 3, Call My Name, Sticky Like Glue
Edit: Or, since everyone else has ignored the rules and done multiple disc sets, here would be my two disc version:
Disc 1: 1. The Most Beautiful Girl In The World - 2. Love Sign - 3. Space - 4. Dark - 5. Letitgo - 6. Enrorphinmachine - 7. I Like It There - 8. Dinner With Delores - 9. Shy - 10. I Hate U* - 11. Gold* - 12. Jam Of The Year - 13. Somebody's Somebody* - 14. The Holy River* - 15. Soul Sanctuary - 16. La La La Means I Love U (or Betcha By Golly Wow!) - 17. In This Bed I Scream
Disc 2: 1. Come On* - 2. The Greatest Romance Ever Sold* - 3. Prettyman - 4. The Work, Pt. 1* - 5. 1+1+1 Is 3 - 6. The Everlasting Now - 7. Last December - 8. Musicology - 9. Call My Name - 10. Get On The Boat - 11. Fury - 12. Somewhere Here On Earth - 13. Dreamer *You may (I'm not sure) need to edit these songs to make it fit on one CD
I'm not sure if I could fit more than 30 songs on two discs, since some of them are 8 or so minutes long, but I had to overlook some albums completely (MPLSound, 20Ten, NPGMC); but I wouldn't do more than two discs - it would just water it down. I don't think any casual fan would need more than 30 songs post '93. [Edited 6/13/11 20:39pm]

A singles (or tracks that at least have been promos) collection should look something like this:
The Most Beautiful Girl In The World Letitgo Space Gold <o> Hate U Dolphin Betcha By Golly The Holy River Come On The One The Greatest Romance The Work pt 1 Musicology Call My Name Black Sweat Fury Guitar Chelsea Rodgers Crimson and Clover Dance 4 me
Still, many great non-singles tracks would be missing, like these personal favourites:
Endorphinmachine Chaos And Disorder The Love We Make Joint 2 joint New World Don't Play Me Strange But True Tangerine One Nite Alone The Everlasting Now Last December Dear Mr. Man 3121 Future Baby Mama Boom! Love Like Jazz Sticky Like Glue.

I agree! Over the last few year, I've actually made my own "The Hits/B-Sides 2" and I think I've made a nice compilation. I was very thoughtful with my tracklist because the original "Hits/B-Sides" compilation was so good, this is representing another 15 years plus of great music from Prince. With that said, here is my rough tracklist of my compilation that I made just prior to the release of 20Ten.
The Hits 3: Black Sweat Man O' War
The Hits 4:
I will post my full updated tracklist for my compilation soon. The one I did after 20Ten was released (just months ago) is better I think. Stay tuned... [Edited 6/13/11 14:22pm]

Why not? The original "Hits" excluded many singles (Girls and Boys, Anotherlover..., Batdance ...) and included many songs that weren't singles or charting hits, but were fan favorites (Head, Adore ...). When an artist has no real hits*, you just use their best songs, or fan favorites. I think my list is far more impressive than a list of all of his post '93 singles.
*Prince does have hits, just no hits since '95.

girls and boys and anotherloverholeinyohead were not hits compared to other songs of his at that time.and batdance was not allowed to be included because of legal ownership of the song not being prince.and those particular fan favorites were also radio staples at that time.adore was heavy in rotation on radio, head was a top 5 dance hit, when you were mine was covered bye a dozen artists.times have changed.we all may like laydown from 2010 but no one else has heard it.not even radio will play it.see what im tryin to say?

I looked up Head and Adore to see if they ever charted, and I couldn't find any info of them ever charting (in the U.S.). I could be wrong, though. But, do you really think the general public has heard of U Make My Sun Shine and Somebody's Somebody? Nobody else I know has... So, you might as well make a compilation of his best songs, if nobody's heard of most of them anyway.

Head Do Me Baby Adore When U Were Mine Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad? Nothing Compares 2 U I Feel For U
none of these were Prince "hits" , more like Prince "favourites",
still they were included on the official "The Hits / The B-sides" 3CD.
And therefor it should be OK to include other Prince "favourites" like: Anotherloverholenyohead Mountains
etc...

Girls and Boys was a hit in Europe and reached #11 in Britain.
Anotherlover and My name is Prince reached Top 40 in the USA and I think Mountains reached #23 so one can claim that these songs were at least ,,mini" hits

OK. This was tough. I'm still missing solid tracks like I Like it There, Holy River, When I Lay My Hands on U, So Far So Pleased, Colonized Mind, She Loves Me 4 Me and Love. But casual fans would never buy a 2-CD best-of album from Prince post-1995.
