That performance never ceases to give me chills while watching it. His genius and showmanship just spilled on that stage and drowned everyone seeing it. LOL. I can only imagine being there! It's Button Therapy, Baby! |

Yes he did. There's nothing better than sticking out like a sore thumb when you should be blending in. Music is not a competition, but even if you believe it is - it is still a team sport, (unless you're playing by yourself, of course). If that band had been a basketball team they would've gotten their asses kicked because of the showboat ball-hogging.
The only thing that performance did for me was reaffirm that Prince can get a good SOUND out of his guitar live but he can't seem to hire someone to dial him up a good guitar tone in the studio. Maybe he should call me. I'll engineer his ass to a good studio sound...
I'm sure everyone was wondering why a Prince show erupted during what was supposed to be a touching tribute to a dead legend. Classy? No, ass-y.
It is called showmanship which I do not expect most people even understand the concept since we are not seeing showmanship anymore with most performers.
You can shine and it does not mean you blocking the light of the other performers |

Lip-synced. That factor alone makes it ineligible for "legendary jaw dropping" contention.
The best part of that one for me is, as they finish he looks at Mayte for approval while chewing gum...Pure genius If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Prince @ the 1985 American Music Awards
Prince & the Revolution @ the American Music Awards in 1985
LA:Shrine Auditorium 1.28.1985
Prince & The Revolution performed "Purple Rain" at the 1985 American Music Awards and just absolutely killed it! The White Cloud was front and center in this clip and it looked and sounded great! I don't even remember what happened with the rest of the show after but it was pretty much over for me after that! I feel bad for whoever had to follow that act! I have heard and seen alot of his performances of "Purple Rain" over the years but this will always be one of my favorites. If you were lucky enough to see it at the time and weren't a fan you were when it was over!

say you were a dead rock musician in heaven. U find out some of your homies/fello musicians are giving you a waddup. Would you like a simple somber wave or exuberant hugs and happiness and hi fives.? His son didn't seem to disapointed, he appeard to be having a blast!
my dad said the same thing. He tought Prince was showboating.
I looked at the context of the song. The song is about how the guitar is the thiing expressing the emotions fired in subjects insides. As if the would was bathed in apathy and the only thing that cared was this guitar that was weeping. I'd be a bit unhinged if I was said guitar. I think said guitar is also an extension of subjects mind...an avenue to express emotion in this world of apathy. The solo in the beatles version is a bit unhinged. 2004's version was a bit more unhinged, I think driving the point with effectiveness...imho. Now in Prince's role in the performance, he's the guitar. It's the only thing he did...didn't sing or dance or nuffin...he stayed in the pocket....Untill it was the guitars chance to unleash the sadness, anger. He was in RED and came out physically/visually as exuberant as the solo was. Prince wasn't Prince...but played the character of the guitar in the song. I'm might be reading too much into this...but it's how I see it. |

In terms of TV performances, I always think the MTV Awards, "Sign O the Times/Play In the Sunshine," is under-rated. That was the debut of a new band, new look, new music, and it was cool watching the band march in with the drums! |
