Baby, I'm A Star (live): Which version is best? I've been jammin' to a lot of the Prince & The Revolution performances of "Baby I'm A Star" for the past few days, and they're almost ALL funky ass masterpieces, but which one do you like the best? You can even include the Nude Tour and Musicology (ugh) versions, if you want. But for me the only competition is from the Revolution performances.
My absolute favorite one is the one on December 26, 1984 at the St. Paul Civic Center. When he tells Lisa to play a bit of Dance Electric while they're all jammin'....DAMN that shit was funky. My second favorite would have to be either the well-circulating Atlanta 1985 version ("112!") or the one in LA on February 23, 1985 where Bruce Springsteen guested. "Where that train at, Matt? Where that train at, Matt? Where train at? We are young! We're not old, and we are FUNKY!!!""
So what say you? | |

City Lights Remastered Vol. 4.
The whole "Remastered" series was pretty fab, in my opinion.

Hmmm, I'll have to go back and take another listen to the La Coruna version, because it doesn't stick out in my mind.

my top 5 versions
video version not sure of the date cause some say it's dc some say it's not
tokyo 90
houston 85 and atlanta 85 are very similar but out of this world
la courna 90
san franciso 85 where he does blue limosuine
i'm sorry i can't put correct dates at this time due 2 a lot of my bootlegs are on my external hardrive and i really need 2 get it fixed ..THANK GOD I PRESSED ALL OF THEM except a tiny few onto cd's
baby i'm a star live was the best during two tours only, purple rain and the nude tour only any other version was just a throwaway
what was marvelous about baby i'm a star live during these two tours was that u never knew where it was going just a long journey!! days of wild in 94 and some of 95 were the same way u just waited for it 2 take u somewhere and hated when it was over!! man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I always thought the video version was the Atlanta 85 performance. Hmmm...I need to check it out again.
Speaking of external drives, I just bought a 6TB NAS drive because I was running out of space on my 4TB NAS drive and 2 externals. Yeah, I d/l a lot of shit! Movies, music, and comic book scans, baby! What's wrong with your drives?
You're right about the fact that the performances just took a life of their own. He could jam anywhere from 10 to 25 or 30 minutes on that jam. And you NEVER got bored while listening. Reminds me of his quote: "We gonna be jammin' for about 20 more minutes...on the SAME song! I don't care! I don't care!"

it maybe from atlanta but it's not the version that says 112 and from the way the intro is it's clear there is a change in the arrangement a little in the build up and verses ..in 85 it was more common for him 2 drop out the 2nd verse
as for my external it's hard 2 say cause i was using windows media player 2 play my files along with cover art fixing etc then one day it just shut down per see and the files just went crazy and it's a shame because it was 5GB of space on it and i only had 2GB full man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Only 5 GB of space total?? I would fill that up in about an hour. I always found that iTunes was a really good app to manage music files and cover art and whatnot. The ONLY problem I have with it (and the iPod in general) is it's not FLAC compatible!! Major no no, esp these days.
I'll definitely have to check this other video version, cuz it's not ringing a bell at the moment. especially since you say it's not the well-knwn "112" version (the unofficial title ).

Yeah the "112" version is Atlanta (was fortunate to see that one live); as for the official video, I always thought that was lifted from the Syracuse '85 Home Video...

i mistyped before hitting send ..500 gb is my external lol man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

nah the syracuse version is funky but not as funky as the video version found on the 2 disc anniversary of PR man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
