Prince and Art Does anyone know if Prince has an art collection? He's a very visual person so I would think he would but I noticed in the pictures of the house in Spain, no artwork except for pictures of he and Mayte. Just wondering if he has any paintings or sculpture and if so, by whom?

Not sure he's interested/intelligent enough in general culture to have an art collection.
Sad, but true..... | |

I know he goes to all the fashion shows so I would think he would be interested in art. I mean, couture clothing is art.

On a very superficial level yes...let's be honest P ain't an art/intellectual sorta guy..
Sad but true | |

He certainly has artwork painted and given to him by Miles Davis ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Considering his clothing styles and cd-artwork from the last 20 years, Prince's taste is too kitschy to be called "art". Also, the pics we've seen from inside his houses (3121 etc), show an american glamour style, not really tastful. On the other hand, some of his early own drawings (1999 cover), as well as his music from the 80's, can in my opinion be called real ART. The man has a strange sense of tasty....a real gemini

BTW... he visited the Louvre museum in the 80's, which insiped him to write "Venus de Milo", so at least he must have some interest in art...

He and every tourist the globe over. No hard feelings.

Oh that's interesting to know -

Wait. The Miles Davis paintings are packed up in a closet? Surely not!

Good question. If anybody out there knows, even what kind of art, he uses on his screensaver drop us a line.

I'm sure, he would dig your Budweiser collection..., really,..

When you and the Wall come back from visting P's homes you can tell us what sort of art he has on his wall. In addtion, you can let us know what sort of conversation you had with him about Art.
The both of you are beyond silly with your comments about P's taste in art when you do not know him from Adam.

I reckon his walls are covered with those motivational posters you see in offices, except with really random 'princebullshit' slogans
In fact... That's probably a thread all of its own... blah blah blah

Aaah, little Laura!...how are you??

I think PenelopePaige makes an important point.
Your remark (and Vitriol's) seems to rely on assumptions about what counts as "art" to which the leading philosophers of art and others who work in the area don't subscribe. Appreciation of art is enculturated and learned; it isn't an innate faculty.

Was it Susan Rogers that said Prince really was just too busy working on music to develop a real appreciation for the other art forms (such as painting)? It seems to be that he was interested in incorporating aspects of contemporary art into his work in the mid-90s - probably due to Wendy, Lisa and Susannah. That seemed to have gotten pushed to the background around the time of Batman and GB.
In some sense, I can see Prince's music reflecting the 1980s and early-90s much in the same way as the works of, say, Basquiat did. I think he also inspired a lot of artists working with different mediums.

And you know him even less. Your defensive tone reveals you hold the opposite opinion, (also devoid of any real facts) as the other two.
I tend to agree with them based on some things I've read, but you are correct - not one sack of shit on this board knows jack shit about Prince. Nearly every non-news thread on this board is speculation AT BEST, so calm the hell down. Your opinion is as pointless and unfounded as everyone else's. Perhaps even moreso because your bias tends to lead toward Prince as a higher being as opposed to what he really is - a short human being who happened to withdraw into and thereby get good at music as the result of a crappy childhood. Sounds like me and most friends of mine, (except for the irrelevant "short" part).
Holy shit, peeps. | |

Thank you srmn You know, now that I think about it, I did read once in some book that Prince had paintings in his house painted by Susanah but when he started dating Mayte he took them down. Don't know if that's the truth but I thought it was pretty down to earth that someone who could afford any art he wanted would have paintings done by an ex.

No. The story is that Sussannah painted some murals when she was with Prince showing some nude figures. Prince found'em nearly pornographic (hence the line 'My baby draws pictures of sex...' in Crystal Ball).
Honestly, being such a nasty lyricist as Prince used to be and at the same time finding artistic nudes too strong is not having a fucking clue about art. That is being an ignorant. Period.

Not wanting to have nudes painted on your walls isn't an indication of a person's ability to understand art.

^Finding artistic nudity offensive is.

crafty. | |

But ignorance is not the same thing as not being "smart". Which, according to you, is it that characterizes his relationship (or lack thereof) to art: ignorance or lack of intelligence?

I'm sure there are many people with money who have priceless art on their walls that they don't understand or appreciate.

You know, I've thought too sometimes. What a damn shame. And here I am and can't afford the art I MUST HAVE (dammitt!) on my walls. But then there's John Mellencamp who is such an art afficionado and even paints himself. Have you ever seen his paintings? They're magnificent! Wish I knew how to post pictures and I would post some but I haven't figured it out yet. Anyway, I"m surprised to hear that Prince doesn't have an art collection to speak of. And I'm surprised to hear people say he's too simple to appreciate art Oh well......

You really don't know what the real story was, or what the pictures really looked like, and yet you're trying to make such conclusive comments out of some tidbits mentioned by biographers? How do you know the nudity really wasn't depicted in a way that was distasteful? Maybe it just wasn't that well done either? Did his staff have kids in the house or visiting the house regularly? Prince might have written a lot of lyrics about sex, but it's an entirely different thing what you want your home being decorated with.
Nudes painted directly on the walls of my home. I think I'd pass too.
This thread is already filled up with really stupid assumptions about Prince's intelligence and his general taste. As if artists working in the field of fine art wouldn't have found conspiracy theories such as "chemtrails" believable. As if there wouldn't be a great amount of intellectuals that are religious. As if all artists would be intellectuals themselves.
Another thread that is a winner. [Edited 5/24/11 23:44pm]
