I like Sinead's version the best. Prince's version is cool. I actually like the Family's version the least of them all. It was the weakest song on their album imo... الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

Sinead's version is THE version. The only good song she ever sang, poor gurl...

You know darn well that because that there are traits that typify them that does not cancel out the fact the works can have there own character as I underscored with "Do Me Baby," & "Nothing Compares." One is an R&B style ballad while the other is has Gospel structure; One is song in falsetto while the other song in his lower register. Saying that it was a typical Prince ballad was a lathargic reply. [Edited 6/17/11 10:42am]

She's had some other nice cuts. "I Want Your Hands on Me" is one of my faves from her. "Get up off that grey line"

I beg to differ.
"Troy", "I Want Your Hands on Me", "Mandinka" and "This Is To Mother You" were better songs IMHO. I do like Sinead's version though.

I have never liked it either, the Prince/ Rosie live version is not that good,
It is missing the passion from the Sinead version of this song.
The Family's original, this is un-listenable for me, terrible, those strings oh dear.......
Sinead's version is fantastic, she made it a classic.
Prince should record a solo version in the studio, singing the way Sinead did.
with a lot of passion.
Maybe he already did, but refused to release it - maybe he wouldn't like his version to be compared 2 what Sinead did to this song.
(I hope this makes sense ) Prince 4Ever.

Weird! I read this topic and then turn on pandora and this song comes on... Spooky! "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

What other Sinéad songs are you familiar with?

I just heard her first two albums. I was expecting some timeless hit singles. I found none...

You can't be serious. Lol
That's a gospel style ballad and Prince & Rosie Gaines singing and emotional fits the song structure. Sinead is a pop singer at best and what is that hiccup style of voice that she goes into when she says "Nothing...?"
Definitive version? HeeHaw:lol: [Edited 6/16/11 10:25
Not only serious, but correct. Just as Hendrix made Watchtower his own, Sinead owned Nothing Compares 2 U. The only difference is that Dylan had the balls to acknowledge the truth. The song, (as Prince performs it)is in a gospel STYLE. It is not a gospel song. The Family version, (which is how Prince gave them the song to sing over) was not gospel. He chose to arrange it in a gospel style, but it is not written in a gospel style. [Edited 6/17/11 17:56pm]

I agree. I HATE Prince's version of this song. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Similarly, I think The Bangles improved "Manic Monday" over Prince's version. The part about "pick a fight last night" is raises to higher notes, the little surreal break "Time it moves so..." is done with a more melody conscious approach. The entire thing has more bounce. I just wish it was mixed a bit more dry like Prince would do. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

What do you think of the Family's Nothing Compares 2 U (Purple Rain era cut?) That one has a lot more intensity, Desire is another that had that PR sound with the guitar solo(that was the Prince & Revolution studio version)
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
nothing compares 2 u became a prince-classic only because sinead o' connor made it a worldwide number 1-song. without sinead's version - we would not discuss this song. prince started playing this live after she recorded it.

A bit like Ssh after Alicia Keys starting doing it live.

Sinead was never really a "hits" artist.
Maybe you should check out Take That or the Spice Girls??

Absolutely! I´m surprised that you are the only one who even mentions that version on this thread. I can´t stand the officially released version with Prince and Rosie, and I also can´t stand the versions he´s done with Shelby, nor did I like the ONA version. This song should NOT be sung as a duet, period. His live renditions of this song during the Nude tour were spectacular, especially the one he did in Buenos Aires at the River Plate Stadium...just Prince on the piano and very passionate singing. That is, in my opinion, the way it should be done.

Oh, I stand corrected. I didn´t see your post. But the Nude tour version was great, wasn´t it.
I think certain songs should only be done if the right atmosphere is conveyed. I mean, I do like the many incarnations and different versions with different moods of certain songs, like Something In The Water and its various versions over the decades, but some of his songs that have this aura of sadness and yearning should stay that way, and not be changed to some unconvincing duet. Or be reduced to a mere chant, like he did with Let´s Go Crazy. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I think you're right...the song is not meant to be a duet.

I like Prince's version the best, then The Family version, and Sinead's cover the least. Her version feels soulless to me. |

Exactly my sentiment.
Never could relate to the brouhaha about Sinead's version.

@ how much people despise Prince's and Rosie's version.

"Brouhaha"?? You mean the fact that it was number one like, everywhere??!!
Or did U just learn the word "brouhaha"??!!!

I don't know what the hell does that have to do with the price of scrambled eggs in your local beds & breakfast, since charts don't always dictate people's tastes, but uh ok
And yes, "brouhaha" is a popular word among my vocabulary

If The Family's record is all we ever knew of the song, it would have faded into obscurity long ago. It was just forgettably bad.
As good an artist as Sinead may be, the poor woman will probably be remembered for "Nothing compares 2 U" more than anything else she ever recorded.
And Sinead will be forever remembered for it more than Prince.
Sinead's rendition of the song has eclipsed and overshadowed the both of them in some ways.
