Who cares what she looks like? Hers is the definitive version, no question.

You can't be serious. Lol

That's a gospel style ballad and Prince & Rosie Gaines singing and emotional fits the song structure. Sinead is a pop singer at best and what is that hiccup style of voice that she goes into when she says "Nothing...?"

Definitive version? HeeHaw:lol:

I'm dead serious. Prince may have written the song, but his available performances don't touch Sinead's for emotion and feeling.

I like Sinead's version (also her released live cd single version). But my favorite is Prince's One

Night Alone version. I agree that the duet with Rosie is a little lack luster compared to the one's mentioned above.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Love Sinead's version ( The Family's one is pretty awful).

The only Prince one I've ever really liked was in Cork for the Nude tour.

Way to switch around my words. lol By the way, I think Martika's version of Love...They Will Be Done and Jill's version of Baby, Ur a Trip have small edges over P's versions as well...

Yeah the live version is so cheesy, sounds like a wedding singer version.

So much is wrong with the Hits version...it's a terrible recording, has 'popping' at the start, doesnt work as a duet, has terrible improv lyrics ("all my dames remind me of you too"), the horrible end (ooo, ooo,OOO,OOOOO!!) and Rosies god awful howling (I know people love her but she is, to me, what Tony M is to others...ruins everything)

I was so excited when I saw it on the tracklist when the hits first came out - you'd think that the fact he's spent years saying "I wrote this" he'd have put some effort in

I've heard Sinéad O'Connor's version and Prince's version from The Hits/The B-Sides and I think Prince's version is far superior.

Um, no. Hardly the case. You're really just a fanboy who thinks anything Prince does today is better than anything he did yesterday but not as great as anything he'll do tomorrow. disbelief

What does that have 2 do with the favorite version of it? eye didn't say eye liked every single version.

But its still a masterpiece that a genius created. giggle

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Not a fan of covers (cant stress that more) But I have to admitt Sinead did a wonderful job, I have both Sineads, and Prince & Rosie Gaines version of the song. And I listen to them both quite often, but NOTHING compares to hearing Prince himself sing this song, even if he sounds like a wedding singer lol

Prince version is more lovable to me simply because Its P, im hearing the man who wrote it sing it, & its sounds better as a duet, But i would go banana's for his orginal demo, I bet it kills both of these versions

No one will ever be able to top Sinead's version, not even Prince himself. It is a gorgeous, haunting work of art. Prince's version I have never dug. The Family version I have never dug.

Sinead adds something to the song Prince never could. Prince's version sound like any typical Prince Ballad, Sinead's sounds gorgeous like nothing else. It was a magical combination of the two that make it what it is. Sinead as much as I admire her work is incapable of such song on her own, and Prince's version is kinda bland on it's own without the class, depth and sincerity, Sinead and her producers added to it.

I don't see it as that outstanding, but I agree that Sinead's version is far superiour to Prince's and the one by the Family. As much as I like The Family's album, that song is pretty boring. And Prince and Rosie duet was just average, both live and on the Hits CD.

Saying Prince version is a typical ballad is like saying green apples & red apples fall from the same tree. Just ain't so. "Do Me Baby," & "Nothing Compares," are as diverse as paintings by Van Gogh & Salvador Dali.

I am an art lover so appreciate your passion, but even a Dali, Van Gogh or even Prince works have traits that typify them, or at least make them easily identifiable as such.

It's all subjective, no biggie.

i would love to hear Prince's version like sinead did it back in 83/84 whenever he would have done the demo for it

the version P released reminds me of the story told about wally

when he does something THAT emotionally truthfull he goes back and butchers it

i doubt very much if that cod jazz mid tempo rosie gaines duet kathy j screeching horns would have made a global number one

sinead kills it

i often wonder what the next massive cover will be

17 days?

desire?

I agree - Prince's live version lacks the emotional resonance of the Sinead cover version.

Having said that, we must remember that it's a live recording and I've never heard Sinead

sing it live so in some ways it's a false comparison. Would love to hear the original Prince demo,

although I get the feeling it would not be that different to The Family version.

I really don't think Prince thought much of the song, which highlights the greatness of the Sinead

cover - I think in many ways, her vocal delivery, strings arrangement and general production are

what really gives it gravitas - having said that, the lyrics are really beautiful, one of the best

written Prince ballads IMO, some very poignant lines that really stay with you.

But I wonder how much of that poignancy is psychologically linked to the visual imagery of

Sinead crying - possibly one of the best music videos of all time - I only wish the director had

stayed with the head shot from start to finish as one continuous shot

(much like Half The Man by Jamiroquai).

Hope that all makes sense, interesting thread....

Its very different. Just like hearing the live version of Noon Rendezvous with Prince & the Revolution vs the Sheila E release

the Prince version feels like Purple Rain music ie Another Lonely Christmas, guitar solo etc I love it. I love both versions. Don't like the latter release... to showey

The reworked version during some of the 20TEN Europe shows (with a gospel feel and Deniece Williams "Silly" feel to it) was absolutely amaing and should be rerecorded or at the very least performed live in the States so that others can hear it. The chorus and harmonies and arrangement overall was beautiful.

I think that the Sinead version is unbearable. The Family's version is interesting. But i did not feel the song until the Hits compilation.

In regards to Prince I'm a fan, In regards to music I'm a fanatic!!
