He's getting older... he'll never be the same. If he did that, he'd be a parody of himself. Real talk. I don't mind him in the current state at all. To me it's evolution.

If you really believe it's over then what's keeping you around? The ones in denial are those who keep repeating ad naseum that "Prince is over", "Prince has lost it", "Prince is dead" because they're all the ones still consistently watching his every move and consuming every note. If he's over and done then why would you care about anything he's been doing lately? For that matter why would it even register on your musical radar anymore? If that's how you feel regarding your musical tastes then that's cool but stop trying to validate your own denial by starting a campaign. I became a fan of Prince's work in 1982 and am still one today. No denial here!

I think The Gold Experience and 3121 join the ranks of Prince's better work IMO. Unfortunately, much of Gold plays catch-up, and most of 3121 is Prince on auto-pilot; however, they are packed with pretty good pop tunes.

Had 3121 been released after PR instead of ATWIAD, it would have been hailed as a remarkable departure and maturing of his sound. Had Gold been released during D&P, it would have probably been one of his biggest success stories. I even think, had Emancipation been released around the Controversy/1999 era, it would have been hailed as his genius magnum-opus.

All the post-90's music suffer from being released in the shadow of legend. Controversy and 1999 were released when legend was being born. Now, I'm not saying that his 80's music weren't genius, but I am saying that his post-90's music isn't really as bad as many think. Sure, there are way too many turds in the mix, but there are also some good stuff.

One of the main problem I have with his most recent release, 20Ten, though is that the old Prince would never have dared release something that was so....so...... dull? The old Prince would have listened to 20Ten and said that there wasn't anything on it that touched him.

I've always thought that Prince's music suffered from being released too damn late-! It's like he would have a stroke of brilliance, compose an awesome tune, then bottled it up and released it after it was no longer relevant.

I agree with all this. I lost interest in Prince around the name change period and missed out on Come and TGE, although I did get Emancipation when it came out (and loved it). TGE is an excellent album in my opinion. I've listened to 3121 several times recently and it's good too.

Someone made a comment in an earlier thread on this same theme that Prince is not capable of another SOTT. That may be true, but I don't think anyone is capable of making another SOTT, and I don't want another SOTT. I'd like to hear Prince make some music reflecting his new experiences as he gets older. Seems like he's had a lot of turmoil in his relationships recently that he could turn into some great songs. His songwriting used to be brutally honest. The next time he gets mad at some old associate, why can't he write a song about it instead of calling his lawyer?

If you aren't in denial, I'm not talking to you. So therefore, don't get your G-String in a bunch lol . I'm happy with the Prince of today, I just get sick of the lames who aren't. I hope I'm wrong of the album tip though. Personally, I just think Prince should open up to some totally different inspiration, then we may get some crazy good new music from him. This was strictly for those "I wish he would do what he used to" crowd....

You know what's weird? Imo, I still think alot of what he did in the 80's in still ahead of it's time. So much of what came out in the 80's is dated today, but Prince's music can still go toe-to-toe with anything today & crush it. We can't say that about mostly anyone... cool

When those albums get remastered, it's gonna be even better! lol

Agree to an extent, but...

The thing is, the point in time of release is often as important than the content.

Dirty Mind released now would feel throw away, but Dirty Mind then was radical departure. All classic albums are a convergence of time, message, style and content, From Pet Sounds to Nevermind.

The weakness in Prince's newer material is that it follows rather than leads, and he still has little new to say.

What from I've read on several threads is that nobody wants to hear anything new that Prince has to say. Whenever he talks about current events, government or religion now everyone starts rolling their eyes. He's singing about what's new for him and the fans aren't feeling it. That's all well and good but you can expect him to tailor what's "new" for Prince to what "fan X" wants to hear from Prince. I've never felt that Prince goes into the studio to make a lackluster CD. I honestly believe most of his fanbase has moved on and only hang around waiting for remasters or some nostalic release or reunion. Those that are doing that are doing it by their own choice not under orders from Prince.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Sorry guys, but he's not coming back! No matter how much you hope it, The Prince we all used to love is gone! He may never release another album of [new] music that will ever blow our minds. It's Over!

It's not like he's the first one, we all saw it with our other heroes {MJ, James Brown, Madonna, Paul McCartney, etc}, but that's what happens when we get old. We become tired, bored, & stuck in our own stubborn ways. This will happen to all of us.

All we have left is the classics to listen to, & the stuff [hopefully] still locked in a vault somewhere. If those unreleased classics still exist.

I'm more than happy with the classic albums & I thank Prince for all of the creativity, passion, work ethic, sexy ladies, impeccable tunes, & inspiration he gave all of us. Prince truly is one of the last living legends we have, & we should cherish all that he has done....

...But we all have to face the facts. We'll never see the splits again. We'll never see the Purple Trench coat again. The days of the stage humping & semen shooting guitars are over. And if he did ever bring that stuff back, we'd probably laugh at him for trying too hard... and Let's not even mention the aggression that's lacking in his music of the last decade. Prince no longer has anything to prove to any of us or himself. He has no competition. He's already proven himself enough. I know a lot of us don't want to even think about this stuff, but hey, somebody has too.

Every now & then, he'll give us a glimpse of his past greatness, but that's all.....

....So with that said, How many of you are in denial?????

He's not dead and that's a fucked-up way to put it.

He changed, so what. I'd be worried if he didn't change and was stuck in the same mindset his entire life.

He's done good work in the past and he's still doing good work now if people will pay attention and stop waiting for Purple Rain part 2.

Where the fuck is that lock emoticon, I don't feel like looking for it right now.

You always make stupid Prince threads, dude. Like, seriously. It's like you have Prince Dick-Envy or something.

What's your problem? There's no aggression or insult intended in the OP. Relax.

"the man who is the same at 50 as he was at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life"--Muhammad Ali

Who the hell wants to be as young and dumb and full of cum as they were when they were that age? I don't, I'm glad I've found at least a way to get peace in my life, learned what to avoid. Anyway, as far as his artistry, I would agree that he isn't what he was in the eighties as an artistic force but I'd still rather listen to Prince than anyone else, I love most of his albums, out of the past ten years, I've loved most all of his music nearly as much, and in many cases more than some of the stuff he did in the eighties. I have to admit, I couldn't get into the rainbow children for the life of me, news didn't do it for me either, and lotusflower was really really bland and seemed pointless to release that much mediocre music. I don't go looking to criticize, that's easy, for anyone, now i'd like to ask to the threadstarter, what have you accomplished in your life? People like you who state these kinds of ideas are usually not happy people and just trying to stir shit up. Prince accomplished enough, more than 99.999999 percent of todays musicians and he doesn't need to do a damned thing.

From my point of view threads like this have me sit back and think and be happy that I became a fan AFTER Prince left WB. If memory serves me correctly, I became a fan of Prince when the Chaos & Disorder album came out. What's burned in my mind, so to speak is the Emancipation Era / Album that stands out. So I wasn't a fan during the 'blow our minds' Era. Whateva era that was or someone thinks it is. I'm cool with the output.

I just wish Prince would take a year or so to make a really great album. Maybe he should consider using a producer, other than himself, and see what happens. Nigel Godrich and Prince would be an awesome combination if Prince could relinquish some control for just one album.

If there was a maturity to his work, and growth it would be easier, but there isn't. I haven't really enjoyed an album in it's entirety since his WB years. When I listen for pleasure, I chose a pre Emancipation disk. I still purchase the music now but it is more out of obligation. I am not interested in the origins of his current songs, his band members, etc. He is an amazing musician, in fact, one of the best we'll probably ever see at the top of the pop chart, but it is mostly boring. I don't feel any soul in his work now. Yes, he is stunning with his talent, but for some reason, his song writing abilities have gone stale. He seems to have no inspiration.

In concert is another thing. I was grateful for his 21 night stay in LA. I saw the 5/13 show and it was one of the best Prince shows I've ever seen, and I've seen him over 15 times including at least 5 times in small clubs 5-10 feet away from him. He'll always be amazing on stage, but his new music just leaves me cold. In fact, when he played new music during the show, that is when most people sat down.

Should he stop recording because I am not enjoying it? hahaha The man is an artist and I wouldn't tell him how to make his art. My voice is heard when I don't seek out his music on the first week of release... sometimes it takes me months to hear his new music. Every new album brings the promise of a climb back to the top, but every album is more of a reminder that he doesn't have something in his life that drives him to reveal his soul. I'm sure that someone could list 10 great songs since he's left WB, but I can't. His post WB greatest hits would not sell much because most people have no idea he is still recording.

I've said it before but when was the last time you sat at a stoplight and the car next to you was playing new Prince music... The last time for me was early in the Clinton administration. That says a lot.

Yeah, you're right on all of this. sad People can say he's matured all they want, but the truth is, a new album coming out by Prince is no longer exciting. It takes you months to listen to a new one? That's better than me. It takes me YEARS to get around to the new stuff. I even got Lotusflower about a year ago and all I listen to on that is Brias album. I don't even care to pop Prince's CD in. Isn't that sad? But I do have to say, I recently got around to listening to The Rainbow Children and must say, I have been BLOWN AWAY. So maybe there's hope. eek

So maybe there's hope. eek

The Rainbow Children is 10 years old. I like it a lot, but I don't think it offers much hint of what's next.

Yeah, true. but like I said, it takes me YEARS to get around to his new stuff. But I thought he was over after Emancipation so I was pleasantly surprised that there was at least one album I loved after Emancipation. And boy do I love it lol

What about a fanbase stuck in the past?

Everyone on here talking about I haven't been excited since year X is full of it! You all still admit to copping every release then going all highbrow and saying "I don't listen to it though". "Obligation". Really? To an artist who hasn't excited you in over a decade? Things that don't excited you tend to pass you by without notice but everyone is still tracking Prince every burp and waiting for it to come out so they can have it for their collection. Sounds like excitement to me. I used to be a big Billy Idol fan and when he stopped making music I cared to hear I stopped buying it flat out. Why buy something that you basically in advance are saying you know you won't enjoy? It come across as sour grapes when you continually support an artist for over 10 years since they interested you then complain about them not being interesting.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!
