Prince/PM Dawn Sample discovery [illegally?]

[I have no clue if this was ever brought before on this site, but I'll post this anyway]

I was listening to 'Cindy C.' today, then I so happen to be in the mood for some PM Dawn. I pop in their first album, "Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross: The Utopian Experience", & then it hit me, they sampled 'Cindy C." on their track "A Watcher's Point of View (Don't 'Cha Think)"! They sampled Prince's 'Cindy C.' exactly around the 3:59 to the 4:03 mark. I bring this up because the PM Dawn album with this song came out in 1991, But The Black Album wasn't officially released until 1994. So they actually sampled a bootleg & got away with it...

....What are your thought on this?

I don't think it's a sample, but just the same simple beat. I could be wrong, as they sampled Prince before.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

It's the exact sample from that song, because if you listen to that part in Cindy C. it has the same exact melody & tempo. I don't even think they tried to change anything. I even hear the same claps in it. If you loop that part in Cindy C. & line it up to the PM Dawn song, it lines up exactly!

Actually,

I was fortunate to have conversation with Prince B over this very same question a couple of years ago and basically what he told me was that he had legally recieved a promo copy before the album was slated to be released and Prince's people still attempted to take him to court over it. B won that case because of a legal loop hole. So therefore, the sample was allowed to stay on the record without any further recourse. What struck me as peculliar was the fact that he was stunned that anyone actually "caught it". Dude had some serious industry stories to tell and was quite enjoyable to hang out with.

Anyway, that's my scoop on it.

Ahhhhh, so I was right huh. lol I knew it! I make beats myself, so I tend to remember certain tones & melody's in tracks. I didn't know promos counted in sampling. Because I was thinking about the whole sampling issue that happened back then...

Yeah, I was fortunate enough to be cool with Dr. Giggles (he replaced Be's brother in the group) around the time PM Dawn went on their tour a few years back. They played in Tallahassee and I was supposed to go hang out with them but had to double on at work. I really regret that because it may have been the last time they ever tour.

But yeah, I caught that sample the first time I heard the song. Being a real Hip Hop head has kinda tuned me in to catching samples. Also the first lines in Set Adrift are about the opening scene in Under The Cherry Moon and Reality Used To Be A Friend Of Mine samples the movie.

I'll take your word for it. I never heard the song before a YouTube search and I only listened the one time. Good info, though.
