I remember listening to a bootleg where Prince mentions the Fat (Bad) video Weird Al did back in the late 80's. He asked his band members if they had seen it and that it was funny to him. Anyone remember this?

different cultures and different people look at eye contact differently, people like prince in our american culture could be considered schizoid/antisocial just like most every other great rock star. Most of them have been known to be withdrawn and shy offstage, you take that kind of temperament and put him in a place where people are looking at you all the time and they won't react well all the time. Would you? It would wierd you out too I'm sure. Asian culture tend to avoid eye contact, as does my own Native culture as a sign of disrespect but you americans have a problem with it think someone is being deceptive or something. You should go hang around some middle easterners who like to get right up eyeball to eyeball, then you'd all be happy fuckers. Also, it's a power thing, I heard that people working on Hollywood sets are not allowed to make eye contact or look at the big wigs, so quit acting like Prince is alone. And I don't like people looking at me either, I just don't fucking like it.
I can remember seeing Prince and the band at an after party. The club was small and the VIP section was just another booth that was roped off. Everybody could see them just chilling and I kind of felt for the dude. It was like he was an animal for display and people just stood there staring at him. Very sad. I kept my distance. I think I can understand why he would not want somebody making eye contact with him. I wouldn't like somebody just staring at me. Just my opinion.

Weird Al was once asked about stars who were not cooperative in allowing him to parody them despite his interest in doing so.
He responded with, "Prince, of course."
He then went on to say that both of them made movies (Weird Al made UHF) that made audiences laugh, though Prince's were largely unintentional. !!

I've often said that the nature of fame is a thing which the human organism is completely unprepared for, nothing in evolution can duplicate it. up until 10 thousand or so years ago, human beings rarely encountered more than 50 people in a lifetime, I could be wrong on the time frame but my point stands. People are not made for the overpopulation, the overcrowding and all the things we have in our world today. anyway, back to eye contact, I remember Quincy Jones said that the feeling of looking out and seeing thousands of people looking at you "pisses you off", I'd imagine that would be some sort of primal protective mechanism, I've never been in that situation so i don't know what it feels like but I do know, I need lots of time with nobody around, people wear me the fuck out. |
