Is this the first time she's covered it?

Interesting...because at the concerts I saw in California, when Prince started to play a snippet of DN, he'd stop and say, "I'm in rehab. I'm not Rihanna!"

I just took it as a general comment (ie. about her sexual songs/performances), but now I'm wondering if he'd gotten word of her planning to play it.

Alternatively, has she decided to put it into her show as a result of him saying that? wink

I expected to hate her version - I was surprised by my lack of hate for it.

Perhaps I'm just grateful to hear someone performing it live!!

More power to her. Obviously she can't pull it off like Prince (and neither could Justin Bieber) but it does show his influence that artists like that would dare attempt a cover. Also shows you how poor they are by comparison. lol But it's all out of love for The Kid as DirtyChris would say. smile

I agree with that.

I didn't watch the whole thing, but - and I'm probably gonna get slaughtered for this - I actually kinda liked it. She sounded good singing it.

I kinda liked it.... but, not because of Rihanna... the SONG itself is simply brilliant and I just love hearing the SONG performed by a good band. And yeah, a great band can sometimes make a poor singer look good as is the case here.

No. Prince's beef has never been with live covers....His issues has always been with artists re-recording his songs without his permission....

It's not a coincidence. Some of Rihanna's band have been to a few of the 21 Nights shows and talked with members of P's band about it. Not a long bow to draw the link to P finding out.

2 things I like about it:

1. The ground recognising the song based on the opening few bars.

2. Nuno killing it on guitar.

Oh and she does say "funky time" not lovely time as previously posted.

At least SOMEBODY'S performing it live (along with the Foo Fighters, who did it MUCH better than Rihanna).

As bad as I hate to hear her doing this song, at least it's getting played live by someone. Hearing her do it makes me wish Prince didn't have that huge stick up his ass about performing it. It's his song, and outside of the Purple Rain tour and the Hit N Run Tour 2000, he's never really performed it live. Correct me if I'm wrong (as I'm sure someone will). Imagine some of the different arrangement we could've had if he played it a little more frequently throughout his career. Especially in the 80s! disbelief

All because he uses the word "masturbate" in it??! Hell, Little Red Corvette is about just as "dirty", if you wanna call it that, but I don't see him being all bashful about performing that one.

Is it moreso than Insatiable? Scandalous?? I think not. And I tend to disagree that DN is "much dirtier" than LRC. It MIGHT be by a smidge, but that's about it. I really wanna say it's just about neck and neck.

clapping eek unexpected pleasure...I think Rihanna did a good job as well as The Foo Fighters, it's each artist's interpretation of the song. They both kept Darling Nikki musically, lyrically and vocally intact, so for me, I am just loving different generations, genres and artists still connecting to Prince music and his impact on the game. nod I say job well done and keep choosing songs that keeps Prince in the public eye, current, hot and relevant! But it so makes me want my Prince fix even more! He continues to inspire...that's our prince he still got the ---- ! sun

Was it good 4 U?

Of all of the darn-near thousands of Prince songs to choose from, why would she pick THIS one?

I like it! I know she's not a great singer, but the song really fits her well, doesn't it? and I love the way the band playing it biggrin

The song in itself might fit her image, but she failed by not making it her own with new arrangement, interpretation, relating to the song, etc. I don't think she is mature enough as an artist to take on a song like this.

But she's not an artist though. She's a puppet who who gets well paid to do what she's told. People who change Prince's arrangements, especially these computer programmers who call themselves musicians, usually fuck it up (exhibit A, Ginuwine-When Doves Cry). I'll admit, it actually worked for her doing it that way, I just rather she didn't touch any of Prince's music ...PERIOD.
