Liberace liked glitter.

Judas Priest liked leather.

Elton John likes wigs.

Prince likes purple.

To each their own, I guess.

Imaginative

Ellington had "Mood Indigo," Jimi had "Purple Haze." Prince is basically like a combination of the two.

Purple is supposed to represent something deep on a soul level (indigo) ..almost angelic..highly evolved spiritually.

Ironically it also is the colour representing of epilepsy..which he supposedly had he said.

He may just like the color-it also happens to be my favorite as well..

The Marrying Kind

If U leave her now
U're never gonna 2 see her again (Never, no)
She's gonna need a shoulder 2 cry on
She's gonna need a friend
She's gonna need a pillow case — something 2 put those tears on
And I've got some purple satin laces
One second later than the second U're gone

I also read in a Prince book ages ago that red and blue are the traditional colours of man and woman, respectively, so like the symbol, mix 'em together, and...

The author might've just been making that up, tho... shrug

PRINCE: the only man who could wear high heels and makeup and STILL steal your woman!

Okay, I get it... (Nice Pics, BTW) What I meant was that you're just as likely to find him wearing white, black, peach, red, blue or gold, etc.... Of course, purple will always be in the mix...

It is the color of royalty

Along with gold, it's the color of the Minnesota Vikings, and the Lakers were originally from Minnesota

It's a distinct and unusual color

it's beautiful

Purple makes since for a number of reasons.

1) As has already been stated, Purple is understood to be a color connected to

royalty and power, traditionally worn by leaders of powerful empires.

Due to this it was one of the rare colors that was believed to be appropriate

to be worn by both men and women.

2) Red and Blue represent female and male energy in some cultures,

the mixture of the two (purple) is supposed to represent the power

to create, or the act of creation itself. Creation is a power of god,

purple then being the color of the god which creates.

3) It is also the color which represents new beginnings (a deeper purple) and life.

4) Christian symbolism also has it marked as a color of

sorrow and mourning (Purple Rain anyone?)

5) Purple is also said to represent wisdom and spirituality,

associated with a close relationship to God.

6) Purple is also associated with deep passion, romance, and love.

7) Purple is also kind of rare in nature, which makes purple feel exotic and well…rare, lol

1) Prince has a royal name

2) Prince is believed to represent a mixture of what is fem and what is masculine

2 & 3) Prince creates; people around Prince have reported that he believes he is a god…which

is true in some ways

3 & 5) Prince is, and always has been, pretty darn religious

6) Prince gives off a passionate/sexual energy

7 Prince is a rare occurrence in nature in his own right

A cool thing is that if you stare at purple for about 30 seconds to a minute and then stare at white (paper works best) you should see Gold. Gold is also a color Prince really seems to like.

"Aren't you even curious? Don't you want to see the dragon behind the door?"

Not to discount what's been mentioned, which I'm sure was an extra "oh cool" bonus, that helped translate the purple so it resonated with audiences in a huge way...but...

...both the purple and paisley came from the popular references in the Minneapolis rock, punk and post-punk scene.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paisley_Underground

One of the popular retro "modern rock" bands was named....(ready?).... Rain Parade.
