Tell Me About The First Time... You heard Prince sing that is Just for the memories Who Knows it might become a nice thread
I'll start:
Okay so I'm about 9 laying in my bed at night sneaking and listening to the slow jams that use to be played on Detroit's WJLB at night so I'm sneaking right remember I'm suppose to be sleep I turned the volume down on that radio/turntable with the lighted dial so as not to let Granny hear I'm laying there with my head on the pillow and all of a sudden I hear this voice This voice that was so beautiful and mesmerizing singing something called "Do Me Baby" At 9 I really didn't know what the hell he was talking about, but I knew whoever it was could sing and from that moment on I was hooked I mean what was it like 81 or so and I fell in love with this voice The next day I went to the mom & pop wrecka stow and put a face with the voice and it was a wrap Let me read your first time Prince story

SEE??? You're just freakin' WICKED!
The year was 1979 and it was a hot summer's night in Detroit. I was at my favorite big brother's house. I was babysitting his kids along with a couple of my cousins. When he got home, since I was the oldest and he lived on the upper floor of a 2 family flat, he helped me set up camp out on his porch.
It was a beautiful night. There wasn't a cloud in the sky. The moon and the stars were shinning so bright, I thought they were soing so...just for me.
My brother had given me his radio. It was new and fancy! It was portable with something called a cassette player on it! Shit... you couldn't tell me nothing!
Anyhoo, I didn't know how to play the cassette, so I just tuned into the radio. At that time, there was a DJ, who called himself the Electrifying Mojo, who was unbeknowing to me...yet...making his presence known on Detroit's airwaves. He had a great voice and he was talking some cash money shit, so I got myself settled and joined him on the ride. Somewhere during the course of the evening, he decided to play a record from "a little skinny motherfucker with a high voice" from a place I'd never heard of...Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The song was..."It's Gonna Be Lonely"
From that very first listen, I was hooked! Like I'd smoked some crack. On Prince and on Mojo! Somehow, someway...no matter what...we would...literally...spend damn near...every night for the next 10 years...growing together.
Alright...damn it! That's as sappy as I'm gonna get! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Seriously though...YOU grew up in DETROIT, too????
As long as we've been on the Org...together! I swear on everything I hold dear...that I did not realize that until just NOW!
HOMIE!!!!!! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Wow just think Mojo motor city babies are up on the org tonight. Mojo played the hell out of "It's Gonna Be Lonely". I just loved that song. He was the only one who played that song all the time. Who needs xm radio, we had mojo... The first time was from WJLB or WGPR can't quite remember...Soft and Wet. The brother had me at Hey oh lover...
The first record I bought was Prince album. I begged my mom for 49 cents to buy the Lp at the mall. She would not give it to me. I thought I saved enough money but forgot a little thing called sales tax. I was in tears. I left the mall emtpy handed. Of course my big brother laughed at me. The next time we went to the mall Prince and It's Gonna Be Lonely was all mine and the sickness begins...

The first time I heard Prince sing was in 2008 (though I'm sure I'd probably heard some of his songs before but without consciously knowing that it was him). I was curious, because I'd heard of Prince, but I'd never heard any of his songs before. I think the first song I ever heard from him was Lolita from the 3121 album. It was a fun song but nothing special, it definitely wasn't the song that made me a fan. When I first got into Prince I was initially (and still am) drawn to the ballads. I think one of the first ballads I heard was either Adore or When 2 R In Love. His vocals were smooth and sent shivers down my spine. So my first impressions of hearing Prince sing were mostly that sensual falsetto.

I was 8 - the song was Sexuality - I knew nothing about the lyrics but loved the groove and feel. Went out a few days later and bought it.
A few weeks later bought Controversy the album and the rest is a purple haze. "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

My first time was horrible. Didn't like it at all. Cream was all around me and I was a little kid.

I was about 7 and my mom had taken me to the babysitters on the East Side.. now i can't remember her name but she and her friends, ranging in age from like 18-23 were sitting around smoking weed and listening to albums.. I heard "Just as Long as we're together". Later i ruffled through the varied pieces of wax.. and found .. Mr. Prince Rogers Nelson .. I WAS IN LOVE.. and introduced to the baddest muhfucka i would ever encounter.. He ruled my life throughout all teenhood.. and has a respective place in my adult heart.. through thick and thin NPG and The Revolution sans Wendy and Lisa.. From Andre Cymone to Brown Mark.. I have been down.. lol I strangled Valentino, you been mINE ever since.. If anybody asks.. U BELONG TO PRINCE...

I'm pretty sure it was When Doves Cry on the radio and on TV when I was about 2 or 3, I'm guessing 1986. Also I would die 4 u and a Solid Gold performance of Let's Go Crazy, and The Time's Jungle Love. I watched them for years on tape before I would discover more songs on my own when I reached my teen years. I remember seeing the Batman video too but being scared, now I think it's fucking sexy! Well I'm not exactly sure, In my years spent as a child, my mom was a BIG Prince fan, and played his music quite often around the house. She also had a Controversy Poster But by the the time Parade was released, she was done with are beloved Purple One (???)
But the first time I took notice of Prince I was about 13 and the year was 1995, although the song was from 1988, so the first song I truly heard from Prince, was Pink Cashmere. I remember learning the chorus immediatley, and just slowy groovin/swaying to the song. Over the next three years, I went out and bought all his work/albums in order starting with For You(was not easy @ the time), But which is probably why Prince's earliest work remains my favorite 1978-1980, Oh and I only listen to Pink Cashmere on my birthday, which happens to be June 8th one day after his, Which is....
MARVELOUS ......

I had just turned 10, the single of 1999 had just come out, wasn't a huge smash nationwide but growing up in Inglewood you couldn't escape it. I picked up that album and the only thing that managed to get it off my turntable for the rest of the year was Thriller!

My introduction to Prince and his music was 'Sexy Dancer' dancing to it with my Momz on a Saturday morning on a cool day in Chicago. My OFFICIAL first time was listening to 'Controversy' from beginning to end at my Aunt Frankie's house (R.I.P.) back when the album was first released but, I had no clue about my man's genius at the time. I didn't 'get it' until Emancipation Era and say Jam of The Year Miami.
Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

Couldn't tell you about my first time. I'd heard bits of Prince for years but he was always that gay looking guy that screamed a lot. It took me a long time to become educated but there was no one single moment that did it. He kind of grew on me. RIP

I was about 12 or 13, 1979, I think. It was summer time and they started playing this song on the radio called Soft and Wet. I loved the song the first time I heard it. At first, I didn't know who was singing it. Eventually, the DJ said that Prince was singing it. Of course, I had no idea who Prince was. A couple of months later, at school, some of my girlfriends where passing around a Right On magazine with Prince on the cover. I've been a fan ever since.

I was seven years old in 81.
Riding with my dad to my uncle's house and "Controversy" came on the radio. Was stuck in my head and I was singin it while we played football in the street. My cousin heard me and said "You like Prince?" I said "Who's Prince?" Later that night he handed me the Controversy record and let me borrow it.
I wore that shit out...especially side 2.
Once 1999 dropped I was hooked. Purple Rain...it was all over. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

I was young-it was the song controversy followed by i wanna be your lover, and lets work. My cousin (who's older) played those tracks for me via vinyl. Although I get the song order mixed up. It twas a long time ago. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Now first of all, this shit happened way before I became a fan, I was about 7 and it was some time 1983, I remember listening to Radio Avon which was like the only independent station in Christchurch (New Zealand), and rest of the stations were government owned then (We had a really bad PM between 1975 and 1984 called Robert Muldoon - Piggy Muldoon) who was a neo facist control freak), anyway Radio Avon was the only station to play music made after 1963, and I remember a song about some guy singing about a Little Red Corvette, I thought it was quite cool, and wanted to know about what the guy was doing to the girl in the car. I asked my Mum, about what he meant about his Baby being much too fast because as far as I knew Babies couldnt drive cars, especially if I was 7 and they wouldn't allow me to drive a car, why would Prince let his baby drive a car, and Mum turned the radio off. I was extremely naive then and thought Footloose was a stupid song, why would anyone want a loose foot, you can't walk well with a stump. My next memory is When Doves Cry, which I thought was an ad for a hardware shop called Guthrie Bowron, and my first proper song I do remember well is Raspberry Beret in 1985 as Raspberry Popsicles were my favourite at the time. [Edited 6/6/11 4:19am] Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I must have first heard "controversy" but I didn't know or care who it was. Then I guess I heard "1999" and "Delirious". Still didn't know these were all the same person. "1999" sounded like "Keep Feeling Fascination" by the Human League to me. "Delirious" sounded like "Freeze Frame" to me.
I first became aware of Prince when I saw the "Little Red Corvette" video. The song and performance video were so intense and cool it really got my attention. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid
