Prince: The Hypocrite

How can he say, "real music by real people," and then walk over to his Purple sampler for 15 minutes? I love him and am among the lucky Angelino's to be blessed with the Forum shows, but this just seems odd to me. I do understand the point of the sampler set; to squeeze another 5-10 hits into a small amount of time for the casual fans and perhaps give the band a break. But I don't really like it. (Of course, I understand that most casual concert goers aren't even aware that it's a sampler or really don't care.)

It would be amazing if he instead gave the band a break by playing 2 or three songs at the piano, which would allow him to make each show that much more unique (i.e. he could change the piano set every night w/o having to rehearse the band). But if he IS going to do the sampler set, he should stop saying, "real music by real people."

Curious as to when this became a regular feature of his set. Listening to a couple of amazing Fillmore shows from 2004, and those don't have a sampler set. I think I've heard shows from 2009 with it though.

The 'Sample Sets' began at the London O2 shows in 2007, and then they made an unwelcome return recently in the Welcome 2 America shows.

For someone who claims to have too many hits and not enough time he seems to play the exact same samples over and over again. Why can't he play When Doves Cry, Sign O' The Times, The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, I Would Die 4 U etc. live? They can be classified as hits, and it's not like there's anything inappropriate with those songs.

My god when will all this end.?

Listen: Prince has proven to be a live player. He earned his chops decades ago playing live and becoming one of the top performers ever. He still does it nightly. He isnt saying real music and never anything else..he has proven to do it. He addsa sampkler set to do a nostalgia trip is all. It isnt like he is playing back up tapes to all of his songs and using backing vocal tracks..he and the band are actually singing. Real music sloganeering is a testament against those new day performers who are not even playing or singing live and becoming stars. No need to name names. Is that so difficult to understand what he means.? Stop being so god damned literal. And even if he played that sampler all night and just sang along with it it would still be cool in some aspects because he has PROVEN to rck it for decades live and he could still use the real music etc sloganeering because he already did the damn thing.

Those sampler sets are clearly too much fun for Prince.

savagedreams

the sampler set though is still all his own stuff. i think part of the 'real music by real people' is partly aimed at the so called musicians who sample other artists and use that as a basis for their music, usually because they have no talent of their own.
