Exciting, right? You wait and the next day the package arrives via Fed Ex. You and your manager sit down to listen to it. The manager lays out rail of coke and reads the cassette case.. "Sugar Walls? Uh oh? I don't know about this, Ms. Morning Train." he says.

The song comes on. Prince is in full on falsetto, screaming and making sexy sounds. 'Temperatures rise inside my sugar walls...' You think of how he was on the phone. Yr manager makes a big gross sniffle, and you start laughing...

Anyway, I'd love to hear the demo of this. I bet it's really, really entertaining. It doesn't happen to be floating around out there does it?

Really? Do you have any evidence of that? I mean, to me it doesn't really sound like his production. That doesn't really sound like his guitar playing, etc...

The track was recorded at Sunset Sound in September 1983, when Prince was working on material for Purple Rain. Prince recorded the song after Easton’s engineer David Leonard, who had also worked with Prince, told him that Easton was an admirer and that she would be delighted if Prince contributed something to her album.

This could lead one to conclude Prince at least did a guide vocal.

Specific recording dates are not known, but initial tracking took place in late February, 1984 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA. Both Prince and Sheena Easton were working with the same engineer, David Leonard at the time in different recording rooms, and Prince joined Easton to record the track. Although Greg Mathieson is listed as the executive producer, Prince was in fact very hands-on in producing the track on the spot. A 1985 interview with Sheena Easton suggests that it was recorded the day after Super Bowl XVIII, which would place it as 23 January, 1984, but this is unconfirmed.

This contradictory, although possibly more accurate account could mean there was never a guide vocal.

It sure as hell sounds like she's following a Prince guide vocal. Those harmonies and falsetto yells... that's absolutely Prince-y. There HAD to be a guide vocal. That's what I think.

It would be so awesome to hear.

I don't know if Prince's version exist but, I wouldn't be surprised at all. Prince vocals is blended in under Sheena's thru out the song. So, it could be a one with the guided vocals on there.

It would be quite surprising if Prince hadn't recorded his own vocals on it, just for the fun of it, but if we don't know, well, we don't know...

If it does exist, I'd love to hear it. Sheena's version (particularly the extended mix) is perfect, though.
