Extended Versions Seemingly the 12" versions of Prince's singles (in particular his releases through the mid-80's) are more complete versions that were cut down for the album (Let's Go Crazy, America), lengthened after the fact (Pop Life, Mountains) or totally re-recorded (I Would Die 4 U) but there are a few that I'm not at all sure about.
Anyone know whether these songs a) were edited for the album b) extended after the album version was finished or c) recorded anew:
Little Red Corvette Let's Work Sexy Dancer Thieves in the Temple Raspberry Beret Paisley Park
Thanks as always everyone!

don't know about Thieves in the Temple
But I believe the others were edited afterward before the album release
Alot of the music then was edited down
Most of the 1999 music is the original song (not edited down)
Sexy Dancer/Let's Work edited
Let's Go Crazy edited 4 album Take Me With U edited the Beautiful Ones edited Computer Blue seriously edited Darling Nikki edited I Would Die 4 U edited Purple Rain edited
Plus a few of these songs were 'recorded live' so editing was done 4 that too
Kiss I believe the long version was created/added afterward

Little Red Corvette - to me it sounds like he added the "extended parts" after the fact.
Raspberry Beret - tacked on a new beginning, hard to say about the exteneded ending. I would think it would be difficult to reproduce the exact same sound many months after the fact, so I would guess the exteneded ending was recorded the same time as the original in preperation for use on the 12" single
Paisley Park - is the album version with added sound effects chopped in and on top of the normal track for the most part. obviously done after the fact.
Thieves in the temple - sounds to me like the exteneded parts were done later.
Lets Work - hard to say. Im pretty sure the additional vocals ("work it.. work it..") were added later, but who knows if the music was done in the same session.
Sexy Dancer - never heard it. are there signifigant differences?
Those are just my opinions, of course.

Yeah it's much longer with additional solos -- similar to the 1980 live version

I doubt he would have extended them later LOL.
He would have recorded what we call extended versions first then just taken an edit of these for album release.

Parts of the extended "Let's Work" were remixed. I doubt the DJ mix of "Controversy" and parts of LW played backwards and parts of "Annie Christian" sampled were part of the original track but his "work it" screams could've been part of the original track though. But who knows?

is just me or are 80% pf those extended versions pointless?...and add nothing 2 the song?....the best extended version 4 me was Another Lonley Christmas with that added verse (best verse imo) and the guitar solo at the end..........however the others are just boring extended instrumentals...tut

I don't know but the extended mix of "Let's Work" is the business.

The long version of Sexy Dancer is in fact the original unedited version of the song. All the other tracks you've mentioned were remixed or extended afterwards.

The longer "Sexy Dancer" is a real club THROWDOWN!!!!

Sometimes...
...not always,
Little Red Corvette for instance was clearly added to later, after the fact to create an extended version. Kiss as well. Probably others.

I spent a crapload of money for my vinyl of that - and it's worth every penny. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I disagree, except for the Sexy Dancer & I Wanna B Ur Lover extended versions, kinda pointless, although some of my favorite songs, there was no need to hear them extended @ all, adds nada "How Can I Stand To..Stay Where I Am? Poor Butterfly Who..Dont Understand." P

Actually, I'd always heard that even the 5+ minute album version of I Wanna Be Your Lover was edited down, and I would love to hear the full funk on that jam. I also feel like Uptown is one of those songs that could have been extended further (the break always vibes in the same way as the groove on Controversy, and I could lose myself in that mesh). Once upon a time in a haystack of despair; happiness sometimes hard to find, yeah.

Well i have a version that ends @ 6:05, but the vocals leave out so early & the beat stays simple, which only makes it seem longer, even the 5:50 album version seems like 12:00 mins long 2 me, not bad, but VERY POINTLESS
& after 2:00 mins of Sexy Dancer im done, very hot but not a "i never want this song to end" kinda song, just fun & sexy, which is why it should be kept short
Now Electric Chair is a "I never want this song to end" kinda jam 4 me "How Can I Stand To..Stay Where I Am? Poor Butterfly Who..Dont Understand." P

Do you mean just those songs that the OP posted or extended versions period? Because most of the 12" versions including B-sides from Purple Rain/ATWIAD/Parade/SOTT are top shelf.

was listening 2 the ext Mountains and that song never ended, so i wonder how long it really is
Is America the officially longest extended version?

i agree with optimus 2 , these extended versions dont do anything for me either, maybe i'm being cynical but it looks like a rip-off to me.

How is it a rip off? . | |

i mean all the 12" extended versions as a whole 4 instance....
Mountains...great 4 the 1st 4 mins...but i dont want 2 hear fucking flutes etc....4 the next 6 mins..without nay vicals grrr!!!
Housequake (7 Min Mo Quake)....6 mins of thumping 4 2 mins of vocal at the end...which 4 sum strange reason is only the 2nd half of teh original song...how shit!!!
an on and on.........pointless

What about these Ext Vers: Let's Go Crazy She's Always In My Hair La, La, La, He, He, Hee Alphabet St.
pointless? NO! Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

Something Ive wondered about the extended Red Corvette; it definitely sounds as though the guitar break just before Dez's solo was edited in (truthfully it's a sloppy edit), but is the opinion here that the other bass line that comes in near the end and the "velvet sweat" monolog were added after the album version was finished? Not questioning anyone who knows for sure, but I'd bet this was in the track originally and edited out for the album & single versions

yes i sed most of the extended versions are shit....yet teh are those like the 1s mentioned above Pop Life, Hello, Another Lonlely Christmas, Hot Thing and Get Off, Feel U Up and a few more x
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
If you mean stuff like: My Name is Prince, Letitgo, The Greatest Romance, Dance 4 Me, etc... those kind of remixes are shit. and pointless.
But, see, I consider those remixes, not extended versions. I consider extended versions to be more like the ones I mentioned, or the ones you mentioned. Where, in most cases, they are the full length recordings that were edited down to create the album versions. These, that I call extended versions rather than remixes (regardless of the title on the sleeve) are usually awesome and should be considered crucial listening for any fan! Don't hate your neighbors. Officially released, I think yes, unofficially, there is the full version of I Would Die 4 U which runs about 31 minutes ?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
There should be an undreleased much longer track of WHy You Wanna Treat Me So Bad, as it is fading out in the middle of a great guitar solo, that he would show the rest of on live sets.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
This was a rehearsal session that the (released) extended version of IWD4U was taken from. The unreleased but circulating 30min version is an edit of an even longer version.

I beg to differ. All his 80's Twelve inch singles fucking rule.
Picking them up and playing them for the first time were all it was about for me back in my teens.
