3121 is excellent, laydown is boring

Both dreadfully overrated.

3121 isn't like Crystal Ball as some fans compare it to.

Laydown grows on you but it's nothing special!

3121 - The first hitting me about 3121 is the thumping intro – the kind of dark delight that The Slaughterhouse brought. The track bumps with tweaks and sounds like George Clinton and Camille have had a baby. I love the distorted and effected vocal. This is gritty funk, rolled in mud and left to harden. The mid section takes me back to Superfunkycalifragisexy with that wonky clavier. And the guitar solo is scorching.

Laydown - The opening sound bending stew of funk had me. Here is Prince having fun mixing his musical elements and putting on the experimental cap again. It has a nod to what is going on musically present but he still does it in his way, and at the 1.47 mark he dips us in the purple funk we all love. On 20Ten he saved the best for last.

The winner (in my book):

3121 - deeper, darker, funkier.

Although I'm annoyed by the old "Days of wild"-Beat of "3121", I still think it's the more daring track. A hint to a futuristic Prince funk sound which never came true.

3121 but only a few live versions from the Vegas residency where he gave it an extra dose of funk

otherwise both are pretty forgettable

"Love", "Fury", "Lolita", "Black Sweat" and "The Word" are all stone-cold classics.

got to be 3121 for me.

Laydown is a cool track, but the purple yoda line always makes me cringe if only slightly.

"3121" doesn't seem to have much of a hold on me, whereas "Laydown" really does. "Laydown" is the type of a track that Prince probably did half-jokingly, but it's often that type of tracks that have an immediately accessible and greatly enjoyable quality to them. You know they're silly down to the core, but it doesn't matter. "3121" just sort of plods along to my ears, even if it's stylistically easier to swallow.

So, I prefer "Laydown".

3121 is the da bomb track!!!! I love it!!! I like Laydown a lot, but 3121 got that irresitible crazy funk mode to it. The mix to his vocals kick ass. Great song...great era.
