Yes Had U is directed at WB, he is using the analogy of a relationship but he's really talking about WB, hence the 'Fuck U' at the end.

That's what I love about art. It reflects what you want it to reflect, doesn't it?

Eventhough now that I know what P meant with the song, I'm going to stick with my interpretation. Because that's what I relate to, and how I love the song.

I'm not involved that much with the whole music business thing. However, it is good to know what P actually meant with the song.

Thank you sweetie. hug

I pray that you will not get harmed by men in that way. Please, honey, be very careful who you sleep with, and be even more carefull for whom you open your heart.

Someone who receives your love should be worthy of it. And the only men who are worthy of it, are those who make you feel good and florish as a person. Don't listen to their words, just observe their behaviour. They will come up with excuses. Don't believe them. The only compass you can rely on is their factual behaviour. Not their words.

You'r in my motherly heart, just wished I could protect you from that harm.

I'm terribly sorry for having to crash your party, dear ladies, but this song is rather a kiss-off to WB than a half-superficial song about hurting a woman. Sometimes things are a tad bit more complicated and deep than that...

You're in my motherly heart for dispelling that illusion.

Chaos and Disorder

Dig U Better Dead

Had U

It's possible "Had U" could have been recycled to fit the concept of this album, but it very well could have originally been about a relationship he had with a girl that burned him.

Is there any recording info on it? It seems like it could go on for much longer than the fade with some really cool guitar playing.

I happen to agree with TheFreakerFanatic but the song is not necessarily about Prince and WB. As far as I know Prince never actually confirmed who/what the song is about. Until he does it is impossible for any of us to say with any authority exactly what the song is about.

As far as the album itself I can't pick three favourites because I love the whole thing. Yes, even Scrap D. and Steppa Ranks!

hmmm I don't get the 'kiss-off to WB', you mean it's about music business?

hmph! I really liked my interpretation and view on the song. Did you really have to crush the party? I was happy being ignorant about the song.

Do you mind telling what is meant by it then?

No, "Had U" was his goodbye song to Warner Brothers Records. It was the last album of "new" material he presented to them (read the credits).

Missed U
Called U
Found U
Begged U
Convinced U
Saw U
Held U
Kissed U
Fondled U
Tempt U
Undress U
Smelled U
Wanted U
Asked U
Thanked U
Minded U
Hurt U
Disappoint U
Fuck U
Had U

Just because the song contained lyrics of a sexual nature, doesn't mean it didn't have a double meaning. He had a "relationship" with WB and that relationship was over and done.

I thought this would be easy, but it's actually really hard! Turns out I really like this album, except for the hip-hoppier stuff near the end (especially the "show me your titties" guy - I'll never stop complaining about him).

I Will definitely takes the #1 spot, though. cool

I think the song was created based on a relationship wth a person that he had (or embellished with his dramatic imagination) , and then he just placed it here on the end of this album as a comment on Warners because it could be stretched to fit. But I think it probably does literally describe a lot of his past entanglements with women that didn't work out.

It could be interpreted to fit his perception of his fans too. Imagine if it had been the only thing on the music club site after it was taken down after he won that award for it.

Yes, that's probably true.

But we should keep in mind that just because a song has a double meaning it doesn't mean that is the only meaning of the song. That's essentially why we speak of double meanings.

It would seem to be that most of the individual expressions in the song itself are quite irrelevant to the "kiss-off to WB" interpretation. "Undress(ed) U"? "Smelled U"? So if the song is indeed "allegorical" then it's just the general idea of it that has that function. Another question would be is that "enough" for the song to be "about" his problems with his record company. As far as I can tell, it seems to only hint at it, and even that's mostly due to the placement of the song as the last track on C&D.

Hmm, discounting hits collections wouldn't "Extraordinary" be the last song on a WB album? If so it sounds like Prince had a high opinion of them. wink

I could be mistaken but I believe that he delivered both albums simultaneously. Also, since Chaos and Disorder was largely a contractural obligation album and not an album that Prince intended to release you could argue that it is just as much a compilation album as The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale was. They both have the same disclaimer about being "originally intended 4 private use only." I see them very much as sister albums.

I see one album as a compilation of rock tracks and the other as a compilation of pop/jazz tracks.

I remember trying to find a WB album for each "line" in "Had U", back in the days. Not sure this is the best you can come up with:

Missed U -> For You
Called U -> Prince
Found U -> Dirty Mind
Begged U -> Controversy
Convinced U -> 1999
Saw U -> Purple Rain
Held U -> Around The World in A Day
Kissed U -> Parade
Fondled U -> Sign 'O' The Times
Tempt U -> The Black Album
Undress U -> Lovesexy
Smelled U -> Batman
Wanted U -> Graffiti Bridge
Asked U -> Diamonds And Pearls
Thanked U -> prince
Minded U -> The Hits / The B-Sides
Hurt U -> Come
Disappoint U -> The Gold Experience
Fuck U -> Chaos And Disorder
Had U -> The Vault

No, you're ablsolutely right. The difference was, C&D was the the last album released whilst he was still with WB. They were both contract fillers, but the Vault was to be kept back by WB to be released at a later date.

Presumably, that's why we have promo vids for tracks from C&D. I'm guessing he had some contractual obligation to provide WB with videos for Dinner with Delores.

For me, The Vault sits somewhere in amongst the early 1990 albums on my shelf. Just as the Black album sits between SOTT & Lovesexy, not after Come wink

I think this album is one of the best in terms of the flow of the tracks, they've been put in a good order and flow together well.

Especially the trilogy:

1) Same December

2) Right The Wrong

3) Zannalee

then again, strangely enogh my fav. cut is Dig U better Dead, the most polished song on the album....

It's an inconistant mess yet it's by FAR not as bad as people describe it to be IMHO.
