777-9311 ...Who does the guitar solo on this, again? I can't remember if it's Prince or Jesse Johnson. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

The song was written by Prince, although the song is officially credited to Morris Day.

Wasn't this telephone actual Jesse"s? I remember it being someone's phone number and they ended up having to change it. Prince's Sarah

It was Dez's.
As for the solo, it's been said that Prince deliberately mimicked Jesse's playing style for the solo.
I'm not a guitarist myself so I can't exactly say how, but I remember folks on here discussing it before. There's a few ways of playing and tricks that Jesse typically uses, or did at the time, that Prince generally didn't.... but he did, for that solo in order to make it sound like it was Jesse playing. |

...You know what? I actually do believe it's the best dance song ever (and the best beat ever made); I've been saying that for years now, but no one ever listens to me. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

And Prince's NASTIEST Bass Line EVER!!!!!!!

Always loved this track (but in 1982 it definitely wasn't considered danceable with that brilliantly stuttering beat and left-of-center bass/synth track). I also thought it was an unusual song, not much in his catalog compares to this one musically.

I agree! As for me it's like the biggest song there is. I can't even xpress what it means to me. Not sure if it is dance, but it surely is funk. Prince I will always miss and love U.

And Prince wholeheartedly agrees. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/
